Need advice about agent plugin design
by Steven North
I am trying to design an RHQ/JON agent plugin to manage a software
resource with the following characteristics:
- there is the software itself (the installation);
- there are a variable number of "bundles" of configuration information
about 250KB in size each which need to be read from and written to the
agent; and
- there are "log" files which can 10-50MB in size each which need to be
read from the agent.
I think I am pretty clear on how to handle the software itself--just
like any number of other agents.
I am not sure how to handle the configuration bundles and the large log
files.
We might want to have the RHQ/JON server manage different versions of
these configuration files and distribute them to multiple remote agents.
Is there some existing domain object that would handle the read/write
aspect of the configuration bundles (zip files)? Could the "package"
concept be used for these? Would we need to create a new domain object
on the server side for these bundles? If so, is there an example of
this kind of thing?
For the log files, I see some mention of the SupportFacet. Would this
be appropriate for retrieving large log files? Is there an example of this?
We expect to access the configuration bundles and the log files using
remote client operations because we have a separate GUI tool to
build/edit the configuration bundles and to correlate and analyze the
log files. Is there an example of using a remote client to pull files
from and push files to remote agents?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give or examples you can point to.

Maven Tip
by Jay Shaughnessy
During a recent JON build we hit a subtle problem in the maven poms.
It's something to watch out for
in your build maven plugin executions. In short, be very careful with
the placement of:
<configuration>
</configuration>
The maven plugin configuration element can be global to the plugin, or
local to an execution. If you
make it global be very sure it really should apply to all executions for
that plugin, in the chain of
poms for the module being built. In general the configuration should be
local to the execution.
Global Example:
<plugin>
<artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
<version>1.1</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>my-repo-deletion</id>
<phase>validate</phase>
<goals>
<goal>exec</goal>
</goals>
</execution>
</executions>
<configuration>
<executable>rm</executable>
<workingDirectory>${settings.localRepository}</workingDirectory>
<arguments>
<argument>-Rf</argument>
<argument>local/repo/thing</argument>
</arguments>
</configuration>
</plugin>
The problem here is that the global configuration may affect other
exec-maven-plugin executions in this or
other poms. In particular, the setting of the working directory is very
bad. This was the problem we hit
in out recent build.
Below is the way it should have been done, this configuration should be
local to the execution.
<plugin>
<artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
<version>1.1</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<id>my-repo-deletion</id>
<phase>validate</phase>
<goals>
<goal>exec</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<executable>rm</executable>
<workingDirectory>${settings.localRepository}</workingDirectory>
<arguments>
<argument>-Rf</argument>
<argument>local/repo/thing</argument>
</arguments>
</configuration>
</execution>
</executions>
</plugin>

Use of Annotations and CDI in agent/server
by Elias Ross
Heiko suggested I create a proposal re: CDI in RHQ.
In short, here are my ideas:
Writing plugins is hard due to the XML description language and not
being able to easily test.
Use of Arquillian is suggested for testing.
Arquillian works best with interacting with EJB/CDI components.
Using annotations for configuration also reduces much of the
complexity the XML descriptors require.
CDI would benefit plugin writers in being able to access necessary
components without boiler-plate code.
CDI would also benefit working on the server-side, where lots of
boiler-plate code is necessary.
CDI is part of JBoss 7, which I imagine you would like to port RHQ at
some point.
A CDI/Arquillian type approach would probably allow you to create
tests that look like this:
public class OracleServerComponentTest extends Arquillian {
@Inject /* This is the plugin component that gets the measurements */
private OracleServerComponent server;
@Named(name="Oracle Advanced Statistics") /* component by name */
private ResourceComponent details;
@Deployment
protected void init() throws Exception {
/* not entirely sure how you could configure components? */
}
... test cases interact with 'server' ...
}
I imagine a compromise might be to simply start with:
1. Create annotations for replacing most of the plugin descriptor language.
2. Add "Weld" and its parts to the plugin agent.
3. Write the parts to boot the plugin.
Then work on the server-side? But then again, you do have server-side
plugins. So you probably need to start top-down on this.
It does sound terribly ambitious, doesn't it?

Replacing the old embedded ejb3 with something new?
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
as I was hunting down an issue with the tests, where the old embedded ejb3 is again swallowing the real issue,
I was thinking if we should finally address replacing that with something new like the ejb3 container from as6/7.
I think that has been transmogrified since I last heard about it, so this would need some research,
While this would be a bigger effort shorthand, it could help us in the middle term, as we could get ejb3.1 and
3.2 support with it.
Also moving the test suite to a current version of ejb3, could help us with a potential move to AS7 as the
underlying container later.
Investigating how to bootstrap the new ejb3-test-container could also be a cool community project.

Congratulations to the entire team! Hibernate 4 started off a little
rough, but in my latest testing, looks like a nice improvement over 3.x
in performance now.

Announcing the "RHQ samples" project
by Heiko W.Rupp
I am proud to announce the inception of a the samples project forRHQ.
This is meant to collect samples and extensions around RHQ that could be used in RHQ and also JBoss ON. Users can go there and copy and paste the solutions to get a quicker start themselves.
While this project is started by the RHQ project team, everyone is encouraged to come and use the samples, fork the project and enhance it. To make this process easier, the project is hosted on GitHub at
https://github.com/rhq-project/samples
The initial content centers around the new REST api of RHQ, and shows how to use this API from Ruby or Python and how to build reports from JasperReports.
Wanja Pernath has also submitted his group control scripts using the CLI in RHQ and JBoss ON.
