Branch-cleanup
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
I think we could clean up some remote branches that are no longer in use:
- alertPlugin
- joprMerge
- nav-tree-flyweights
- release-3.0* except the last 2 ones
- spearhead
-...
But then I am not exactly sure about implications, my understanding
is though that through merge all history information is in master, so that
we don't loose information and can safely clean up.

Please welcome Rafel Soares as contributor
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hello,
please welcome Rafael Soares ( fas: rafaeltuelho) to the list of RHQ contributors.
Rafael will work in the area of translations, I18N and L10N of RHQ.
Rafael is based in Brazil ( I think in the capital, Brasilia ?), so is a Portuguese
native speaker.
Rafel why don't you introduce yourself?

Maven compile errors while building portal-war
by Alexander Kiefer
Hello together,
I´m working on the Nagios plugin and the dynamic metadata, and for that
purpose I created a small jsp page to create new ResourceTypes and metrics
while running the RHQ Server. Heiko told me to put the .jsp Files to
\modules\enterprise\gui\portal-war\src\main\webapp\admin\test of my code
branch and make a maven-install -pdev on the level of portal-war to rebuild
the .war file and deploy it. Unfortunately I get a lot of compile errors
while building. A lot of classes (cannot find symbol) and even packages
(package does not exist) seem to be missing (but they are actually there)
and I don´t know exactly whats the reason for it. Im using maven version and
also tried it with version, and I build against Rhq 3.0.0.B04.
Thanks for help,
Alex

Status of Perspectives now and with GWT ?
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
what's the status of the perspective service in current master - is it usable?
To what level? I recall we disabled dynamic menu generation because of
performance issues.
Would the perspectives be integrated with the GWT UI? How would that work?
Thanks
Heiko

I18N, message bundles and I18Nlog
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
we just got a contribution of brazilian (protuguese) installer messages - which is in
.properties format, as "normal" java message bundles are.
We are using I18Nlog with the annotated Interface as input
@I18NMessages( { @I18NMessage(locale = "en", value = "Create a database/user if needed"),
@I18NMessage(locale = "de", value = "DB mit -benutzer anlegen, falls nötig") })
String CREATE_DATABASE_NOTE = "createDatabaseNote";
Which would require every contributor to add new translation to this file, which sounds more and more
impractical.
Also I've contacted transiflex.net that allows independent translators to translate stuff.
Transiflex will very probably offer .properties files soon (at the moment they only offer .po
files).
So I propose to move all message bundle .properties files out of the I18NInterface
into .properties files that reside in normal git ( one could leave the english ones and
recreate the base .properties file after changes of the interface ) so that it will be
easier for translators to add a new language or update existing files.

Re-think availability processing
by Heiko W.Rupp
While testing some stuff, I had my metric collection set to 1min and at one point had
to shut down the agent.
Result was that the server correctly saw the agent going down. Metric did not show up equally
as expected. BUT just showed as green.
Of course one can argue that the monitored resource itself was not down, so green is correct.
But then the graph just having a hole in the metrics but always showing green is confusing
(se attachment)
Another area where our users are struggling and which lessens the value is the relatively long
availability reporting interval, which we've introduced to reduce the load for large scale systems.
I know that this can be configured; still operators expect to hear from downed hosts earlier from their
SLM system than from the customers.
The third area (which is my pet) is the issue of lingering resources that are always down, just
because they got auto detected, but are not in use and can't be auto-inventoried.
