+1 for gnulib. We used to have it in the build process because of
netcf. I believe since we removed the requirement of netcf gnulib was
no longer needed.

Instead of implementing your own asprintf(), I might suggest using gnulib[1].
It has portable replacements for many library functions (including asprintf),
and has been used to fairly good success in libvirt for cross-compiling to
Linux, MacOSX, and Windows.
