Actually, I believe both Doom (III) and Quake 3 are open source, but
their maps are closed source.
So, if you have the CD, with the maps on it, you can legally play it on
linux...
Might want to take a closer look at Fedora Extras. The doom engine as
well as a package of Free GPL'ed maps are included in it.

Legal is not the only criteria for inclusion in Fedora though.
