Please Advice - Fedora 9 Release Party at Los Angeles
by Grady Laksmono
Hi Ambassadors,
This is the first time I'm organizing an event for Fedora Project,
here I would start off with Fedora 9 Release Party on my campus. I'd
like to get some advices, comments, feedbacks, suggestions, etc from
those who've been more experienced in organizing Fedora events.
Here's my plan for the Fedora 9 Release Party at California State
University, Los Angeles:
1. Time, Date, and Place
Time: 12:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Date: Friday, May 9, 2008
Location: California State University, Los Angeles
Building: College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology
Room: E&T A220
2. Marketing Materials
- Fedora 9 Banners: Print these on this Friday at Kinko's like this
and post it around campus next week. I'm going to look for some design
from the Media Arts team.
- Fliers: To be given out and put on all around campus, the
fliers should have the design design of the Fedora 9 coming up design
release, and that there's a website where they could vote
(http://acm.calstatela.edu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2487) on, time, date,
place where the event will be held. That way I could anticipate on how
many people would come to the event. These will be printed at the same
time when I print the banner. Voting is not required to come to the
event, some people have a time, some don't, but I encouraged them to
do so, so that I can anticipate numbers.
- Me and some of my team on campus would give some class announcements
about the event.
3. At the Event
- Someone gives a talk during the event about Fedora 9. I'm thinking
about Thomas [1], since he's probably also the only one who's around
in my area? Or someone from Red Hat?
- Free pizzas and sodas at the event for all of the attendance. (am I
going to get reimbursement for this?)
- USB Creation Stations
- Free Fedora 9 Live CDs
- Free Fedora 9 DVDs
- Questions and Answers sessions
4. Timeline
12:00 - 12:30 Opening Remarks
12:30 - 1:30 Lunch
1:30 - 2:30 Guest Speaker(s) (will be decided)
2:30 - 3:30 Questions and Answers
3:30 Dismissed
Please give me inputs, feedbacks, comments, etc.

Red Hat's Challenge
by Marc Wiriadisastra
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Red-Hats-Challenge/
"While Linux is as good and perhaps better suited to the needs of
knowledge workers who do not require Windows-only applications—a
category into which I fall—the lack of an identity and management
solution for Linux that's comparable to Microsoft's Active Directory and
Group Policy is retarding Linux's growth.
But based so far on my tests of Red Hat's Fedora 9, which is due in late
April, the pieces required to fill this gap for Linux—namely, the
PolicyKit management and FreeIPA identity components that make their
debut in this Fedora—are starting to fall into place."
It's mainly about Red Hat but it very much explains Fedora as an
unstable Red Hat which to me does not credit Fedora sufficiently.
Cheers,
Marc

support v. support (was Re: Get Support link?)
by Karsten Wade
(Moving this portion from f-docs-l as something I've been meaning to
talk about in a marketing context ...)

As are many other words ... and yet we get along OK with that. What
makes 'support' so bad?
"Don't call it support." This has been a mantra in Fedora for some
time. Despite that, people still refer to 'support'. Our closest
right-thinking has been to call it 'community support'.
Later in the above email, Paul suggests 'help' is an appropriate word,
and I tend to agree. However, people still say 'support/supported',
especially where 'help' doesn't work:
"Is my hardware supported by that video driver?"
"How can I support my installation?
etc.
We can continue to worry about the word support or not. The question I
keep asking myself is, "Would it change the expectation of people
requesting help if they understood from the beginning that there is no
commercial support relationship?"
I expect that it does not change people's expectations. Folks who think
they deserve 'support' are going to feel that regardless.
In the end, I think we cause ourselves unneeded worry chasing down the
way we use the word support, and I'm not convinced we've made a bit of
difference.

news.fp.o and workflows
by Jonathan Roberts
On the idea of testing workflows for the news.fp.o site, and whether
this needs to involve the test instance, Karsten says:

Thomas, others, what do you think about this?

My list:
* FWN
* Press Releases/Announcements
* Stories (I think this equals Fedora Fundamentals or whatever has been
decided for the name!)
* Interviews

So, do people have thoughts about these bullets? Things you'd like to do
with news.fp.o? Reply and lets see if there are things that need testing
or whether the workflow is pretty self-explanatory!

OK as you wish, marketing list is the wrong place - and a lot of Ambassadors
did not read the marketing list

And yes, RedHat does major work and give much money - but Fedora would not
exist in the way as it is, because of the work and the commitment of all the
free contributors and i know and i feel, i dont want it marked as a RedHat
SubProject. This is wrong!
cheers
