For ease of future adaptability, could we have an html homepage and
all the documentation on wiki, or would we likely be getting into CMS at that point? And
if so, we might as well do media wiki for home.

I'm not sure I fully understand. Did
your last sentence abrogate your
first one? :p
Anyway, I am fine with having everything be a wiki for now, and just
have / redirect to the wiki front page.
The way I usually code sites nowadays is that I put all applications in
their own directories, so that "nothing" is on the front page, but we
redirect to the default. So, take, for example, if we have the
following apps running on our site:
* Blog (e.g., WordPress)
* Wiki (e.g., MediaWiki)
* Docs (e.g., Drupal)
The reason I prefer subdirectories as opposed to subdomains is because
subdomains require and extra DNS lookup, which in some countries that
proxy everything, time-out on the first attempt (United Arab Emirates,
for example - I have a friend who lives there). Also, subdomains cannot
share cookies as easily, while subdirectories can out-of-the-box
(there's ways to make it work). This way, we could implement (later,
not now!) a single-signon feature if we like. Also, in the grand scheme
of things, subdomains are really useful for truly different sites, while
all of our content is part of one, unified site, for the time being.
Maybe we want the front page to be the blog, and it will have links to
the other sites as appropriate. Naturally, all other sub-sites could
also be entered directly, and there's no problem with that. We can just
have links pointing to the other components without too much difficulty.
So, someone enters
example.com without specifying anything else, we
redirect them to /blog. In the future, if we want to have a landing
page, one that is just HTML or even part of another app, we can always
change how that works. What I mean by this, if we get someone that is
actually a designer (something which I, sadly, am not), we can design a
nice landing side that would be at /index.php that we can use to link to
all the sites individually.
That's just an example of what I was thinking, and it seems that is
somewhat in line with what you were saying above, as well. By the way,
the examples above are just intended to be examples. I'm not saying
that's how I want the actual layout of the site to be. ;)
