i am not sure how the wildcard key would work and will have to read more on it.  as a work-around, it will be nice, but fixing any issues would be the appropriate action.

changing my autofs config to use ldap instead of sssd causes the same thing.  /home/$USER is created and no variable expansion is done.

since this looks to be an automount/autofs issue and not sssd, how do i get the attention to this it needs?
