No, the codes are more for fine-grained control, but the simple values
are easier on humans.

ldap_child.log is for GSSAPI binds. I'm guessing since you're at CERN,
you're using Scientific Linux? What version of SSSD and openldap are
in use?
Also, check /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure when you see that
error. There might be information available there.
