It's relevant that this fix only actually works thanks to another bit of behaviour that's fairly clearly incorrect: the unsetting of bootDrive on entry to the custom partitioning screen. We all more or less agree there's no reason why that should happen, and if that were 'fixed', this patch would in fact stop having the desired effect (it might still help some kickstart cases, but I haven't checked that).

dlehman floated some tentative initial ideas about doing a more comprehensive approach to the problem here which seemed sensible to me too, so I'm happy to wait for that. I assume it'd be best to close this PR at least for now, but I'll leave that to you.
