Hi,
I am going to acquire a new notebook. It should have adquate battery power. No high-end video card is needed, I think Intel 9xx should be enough. Other than that, some features such as card reader would be nice.
I have a choice among the following brands: Acer Asus HP Toshiba Fujitsu Is there any model that is particularly suited for FC6?
I use an older version of HP notebook, HP NC6220. Comes with Intel chipset, Intel video card and Intel wireless network card. All works out of the box except for the wireless. I have to download and install ipw2200 from rpm.livna.org, then everything works fine (_including_ wireless)

For now, I would stay away from an X86_64 notebook as from my experience, they run VERY hot.
I have had very good luck with Toshiba and IBM laptops and Linux. My earlier Dell laptops had issues unless you ran the i8k utilities to control the fan (fan was SW controlled, not by the BIOS). Some examples: Toshiba T320?, T8000 (multiple), IBM 755, IBM A31p, Dell Inspiration 8100, Gateway MX6421 (I believe these are the models). The only internal modems I have had working were on the earlier IBM and the T8000.
Good luck, YMMV. -- Wade Hampton

I do that. However I would like to know what notebooks are well supported by Linux AND recommended for their performance, battery life etc.

I have a Dell Latitude 120l that works awesome with FC6. Wireless (ipw2200), 3D accel (Intel 915), XGL+Compiz, sound, DVD, etc. The battery lasts for about 4h (6 cells, LCD in brightness level 3).
I have a co-worker with Dell Latitude 620, running SUSE, and everything works perfect for him too, even the S-Video output.
No experience with core duo but would love to hear some comments about them on laptops running Linux.....

I have a Toshiba A105 with the core duo - it handles FC6 just fine. It does have a large heatsink/fan, and the fan will cycle fairly often when running at full speed. (It does this regardless of the OS you are running.) About the only thing not working is the backlight brightness control. The Omnibook module needs a bit more work to get that to work...

Acer laptops seem to have ATi graphics, at least all three that I've seen do. This may not be a problem for you if you don't require 3d acceleration, but you may have a struggle if you need to run the laptop with a projector, as clone output may not be available.

That will be important. How well is the Intel graphics supported, with respect to dual monitor?

Well supported. I have a notebook with Intel 915GM chipset and use it with projectors and external monitor (FC6) with no problems. I just needed to fine tune xorg configuration (what was not needed in FC5, by the way). However, I couldn't make the TV-OUT work yet..

Acer Aspire 5000 series have SiS graphics chips.
There are 2 Aspire models and a TravelMate in the family and all have ATi graphics. It looks as though you can't even go by the 'family' name, and will have to check each model individually.

My Aspire 5500Z has the Intel 915. When I first installed Linux on it, I needed to use the 915 resolution hack to get the full 1280x800 resolution but that may no longer be necessary.
For the rest, the installation was a breeze and I am quite happy with it. Its 1.7 GHz Pentium M is about twice as fast as the 2.4 GHz Pentium IV in my desktop box.

I have a Toshiba with FC4 and everything is working. As posted by others, you will have to look at the specs for each model before purchasing. I did this and still ended up with an issue between drive types. The specs said IDE drives and the BIOS showed SATA drives.
I made sure that I had nvidia graphics as this made life easier because I needed 3d support which I never got working on any newer ATI card I have ever tried. (2 yrs ago).
With the latest kernel in FC4, I can even use the card reader that wouldn't work when I first got the laptop.

Currently I am looking at Asus and HP-Compaq notebooks. I don't need wide-screen and high-performance 3d graphics, but I like to have good build quality, and Dell doesn't deliver it (I still have a Dell Inspiron 3800, and while it did the job, it looks crappy). I read that ASUS are among the best (I am considering ASUS F2F). The HP-Compaq I am investigating are the nc6320 and nc6400. Any experiences with these?

I'm using an Asus A3e, and it works really well -- the components seem to be the commodity kind, not the customized kind, which means that Linux will run fine on it. (I am typing this message out on my Asus A3e now.) Also, by commodity, I do not mean cheap and nasty, the stuff Asus puts in seem to be quality components.

Hello,
You may want to include your finding at: http://www.phoronix.com. This is an indexing site for those who want to index the type of computers and hardware that are compatible with Linux. Thanks for the info.

I'm using FC6 on an Asus Z92U (or A6000U depending which documents/parts you look at). It came with a SiS graphics card which IMO sucks under linux (no opengl), though other versions with the same model number have different graphics cards. Otherwise, everything "just works", even the ipw2200 wireless.

Chris
