It can't because you still have to specify not just the ESSID but also
the password or passphrase. See that padlock icon? That's what that means.
Does your desktop have a particular way to manage such passwords? KDE
has KWallet for that purpose, so that means you have to set one up. I
don't know what GNOME does about that.

As I noted, I am connected to the correct, default network, and booted
up that way. I just restarted network manager and now get the
traditional wifi icon.
