I've found most problems updating using yum resolve themselves within a few days. But this one has lingered for several weeks now. system-config-bind (4.0.0-38_FC4, the Red Hat BIND DNS Configuration Tool) shows up on the yumex list of packages to be updated. But the update bombs out with this message: Missing Dependency: libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0(WXGTK2_2.4) is needed by package audacity Missing Dependency: libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0 is needed by package audacity The problem is I have audacity (1.2.3-5.lvn.1.4) listed as already installed. What's going on here? Any advice as to how to proceed is appreciated, as always.

Can you not just try and install the shared objects.

I'm trying to do a yum update after installing FC4. It bombs out with these messages:

I have had this issue with the libwx_gtk2 packages myself. I had to remove audacity and libwx_gtk2 to get past it.

I then installed then installed audacity from Dries which is version 1.3.

I just tried to install wxGTK2 and ended up with two dependencies for Audacity and Videolan client. Both of these are dependent on xwGTK.

This I feel is a problem more associated with the changes to GTK than yum.

As a test, I removed wxGTK which required removing audacity and videolan client.

I then installed xxGTK2 from extras. This brought in wxGTK-common as a dependency. I then installed audacity from extras. But when I tried to install videolan-client, I ended up with dependency issues between audacity, wxPythonGTK2, wxGTK2-gl and a few others. I don't have time to resolve these at this time but this proves to me that the issue is with the individual packages and not yum.

Time to file bug complaints to the package developers over the wxGTK2 issues.

Maybe the developers have been working on the problem. Although this didn't work before, I resolved the problem of updating system-config-bind (4.0.0-38_FC4 (the BIND DNS ConfigurationTool) by removing audacity first, then doing the update of system-config-bind, and then reinstalling audacity. This resolved all dependency issues.

Then I get normal-looking service start-up lines (with an OK at the end of each) for pcmcia, irqbalance, lmsensors, and anacron. Then the system hangs.

Googling acpi_cpufreq gives me plenty of users saying they have problems related to this message (or at least are getting the message). But I haven't found any solutions yet!

do something that it's not able to, and doesn't *have* to, and fails in the attempt.

Usually, the last thing you see is what you want to test out. Though I doubt anacron is the problem, you could try individually starting and stopping it. But a hang (or very long wait) at that point, or to do with starting X could indicate a name resolution issue.

I fixed this by loading the second most recent kernel (2.6.11.1.1369_FC4) instead of the most recent kernel (2.6.14-1.1656_FC4) from the Grub menu. A lucky guess -- does anyone have any idea as to why this worked? For example, what does the difference between "1369_FC4" and "1656_FC4" mean in the name of a kernel?

I can only say to read the release notes for it. I don't know the specific differences between them. I can say that I don't have problems using Gnome with them. I don't have KDE on my system. You could try seeing whether you get a hang if you were using Gnome instead of KDE (or any other-than-KDE window manager), as a quick test.

Because a URL can describe more then a web page. Konqueror, the default KDE browser, is also a file system browser, and knows about a lot of formats that other browsers may not handle.

The Xen kernel is for virtualization. If you want to run guest OS versions on your computer, the xen version is the choice to use.

I use the regular kernel version for two reasons. The xen kernel caused my computer to go into reboot cycles before it did anything. The other reason is I do not run virtual machines.
