I took another go at it, uninstalled the RedHat version of OO, downloaded and
installed the RPMS from
OpenOffice.org (version 2.0.1-1.i586) and so far they
seem to work fine. It does not setup the OO shortcuts in KDE that the RH
version does, otherwise it is fully functional.
The question remains: Why is the RedHat version of the binaries not working?

Subject: RE: Open Office 2.01 not working.
Tried both Arthur's and Thad's suggestions,
When launched from the console (/usr/bin/oowriter) there are no status messages
in the console.
I also tried uninstalling all oo packages and reinstalling only the basic
packages (without the language packs) to no avail.
OO is still exhibiting the same symptoms.
Any other suggestions?
