What puzzles me is that I was able to reach a much friendlier
bootloader by enabling Secure Boot and selecting /EFI/fedora/shimx64-
fedora.efi as a trusted UEFI file for executing.
Does ayone know enough to shed some light on this?

During boot, depending on your hardware, you should be able to press
<F8> (or similar) to manually select a boot device. See if your hard
drive is listed. If it is, and if two or more drives are listed, it
might be trying to boot off the wrong disk. Select the Fedora one and
try booting it.
