Even if you install an X server, the native Firefox is not going to use it to render. You may be able to compile a version to work but it will take more than just having X.

I tried this:

ssh -Y mac_ip

export DISPLAY=:0

$ /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox

But no joy

Thoughts? Is this possible?

The MacOS display system is not based on X, so this won't work out of
the box. I believe you can install an X server from the Mac app store
which should allow it to work.
