i configured and reconfigured the hardware bios so many times with no avail.  this system was running FC5 until i decided to install FC6.  I have another system that I can try installation again.  I've had FC6 on two laptops and there're just fine without any installation issues.

My first reaction would be to blame the hardware :-). If you are installing from
DVD or CD, you should be able to just type "memtest" (or maybe it is "memtest86")
at the prompt when you boot from CD and have it run the memory test for you
to eliminate (or confirm) one possible hardware problem.
