During boot, I get (as a last line) something like

I get the prompt to enter control-D or enter the root

How can one debug this to find the root cause?

There are absolutely no messages in any of the outputs
you request, as I have already followed these steps and
found no hint in any of the outputs as to why I am getting
this message. More details of the screen output when I press
Ctrl-D (to continue to the GUI login pane):

Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type journalctl -xb to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or ^D to try again to boot into default mode.
After I typed ^D, I got:
Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Could not connect: No such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)

Mind you, I have no idea why it boots into emergency mode.!!

I checked /boot/grub2/grub.cfg and this is the line for loading linux:

        linux16 /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.3-200.fc22.x86_64 root=UUID=3cb67785-a34e-4c28-939f-6a979e10da7b ro audit=0 resume=UUID=afeab200-95b9-49de-8b16-9769c3aa7b22
