The issue now is about wifi connections and usb (!!)
If I plug an external usb harddrive, the wifi connection becomes

Important question: Is the USB harddrive externally powered?
Ed makes the point that the USB host may not handle powering the drive
and the WiFi, very well, simultaneously.
I'll make the point that some externally power supplies are absolutely
terrible, they can radiate a massive amount of electromagnetic
interference.
I've had a couple that could knock an ADSL modem off-line if I plugged
them into a computer, anywhere on the network, even in a different room.
The drive just had to be connected, the system it was plugged into could
be completely powered off. It just spewed crap everywhere. The modem
would die off and stay unworkable.
For what it's worth, for anyone else dealing with this issue, the
wall-warts are better than the small brick in the middle of a cable,
power supplies. I haven't had the wall-wart power supply interfere with
anything, even if they're a switchmode power supply.
