Weird. Do you have also:
ssh: connect to host ... port 3022: Connection refused
If I use the format I show, it works just fine.
With "vncviewer SERVERNAME:1 -via localhost" you are first opening an
ssh tunnel to localhost. This is useless. I guess you can connect
directly with: vncviewer SERVERNAME:1
A way to see how vncviewer setup the ssh tunnel:
strace -s 1000 -f -e execve vncviewer SERVERNAM:1 -via localhost \
|& grep 'execve("/usr/bin/ssh"'
