It doesn't work like that. Whatever gets streamed into gzip is what
gets streamed out. If there is any difference, that would be a very
serious bug in gzip. It should be no different from a straight dd as
long as you are doing the read and write the same way.
I am sure the data was exact. The location it put it
is another issue.
