I'm not quite clear on one thing: if what you've written is correct, a
regular user can't cd to that directory even after root mounts it.  Is
that correct?  If so, what are the permissions on it when it's mounted?

If root were to mount it with the mount command it's fine root nor a mortal user can mount via cd command expecting autofs to make the mount.
