do you have a choice of logins, like KDE/gnome??
maybe you didn't allow enough space for root..
does # df -h
show enough space in root?
you might try installing a lightweight DM like LXDE or XFCE4..
if you can get in as single user you might look at journalctl to see
what happened when it locks up
