Ok so tonight I tried enabling, and I had to manually rm or mv the existing display-manager.service file because enabling another DE would not overwrite it. I tried both SDDM and LightDM... neither of which would boot correctly, all  got was a black screen with no mouse. Alt+F# would not work either. So I'm thinking she locked up tight as a drum.

UGH!  I went through and individually removed all gnome things.  And what do you know, of course there was a hidden dep in the list for that damned GDM. So a sudo dnf list installed | grep gdm returned zilch!

So reinstalling gdm* put almost all of it back! What the hell!  I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I can't get any other DM to work and my journalctl is FULL of BS errors related to Gnome crap that I dont even use.
