If I understand correctly, I will need the nvidia driver installed to use the gpgpu for M/L. I don't want/need to run a display on it (wayland or X11). Thanks, Neal

Also blacklist the proprietary Nvidia driver if it's installed (or uninstall it of course).
I was about to make the same suggestion since I do this myself in order to run GPU pass-through to a Windows VM guest, however the side-effect is that the GPU is no longer accessible from Linux, which may not be what the OP wanted.
