If it doesn't have an IP address, how in the world can anything communicate
with it over an Ethernet link?
It would be interesting to run a nmap scan on the local network where that
thing is plugged in and see what pops up. Possibly nothing, if that quote is
an accurate description.
There are other protocols that work over Ethernet besides TCP/IP,
and will work on the same network. You only need an IP address for
TCP/IP protocol, and protocols that are transported over TCP/IP.
