My thought exactly. Just to put my two cents in, I'd start by using
GParted to blow away any partitions on the drive, create four primary
partitions and format them ext4. Then I'd blow them away, create one
partition and format it NTFS, which is probably what whoever ends up
with the drive will want. That won't remove the data, of course, but it
will ensure that the average layman won't be able to recover it, and for
most people, that's all you're likely to need.
