@ed: It worked for the OP on F26 "reliably" (his first message) - not on
F27. So unless he did a BIOS upgrade oder someth. like this in the
meantime it *looks* like a Linux issue. And it looks like Frank with
different HW has a similar problem.

@InvalidPath: Yes GDM seems to be a Gnome thing - but I wouldn't be
surprised if one could use it  for another desktop than Gnome.

Plus: I'm running out of ideas: Did you try to start your machine
without X? There's a link in my previous message to a fedora page where
this is described in detail ....
See: if sleep does not work in a non-graphical environment too, we
need to look at the kernel settings ...
