Oh, also, do you happen to have a /etc/nfs.conf.d directory?
No such directory.
I also tested to explicitly disabling version 4 in /etc/nfs.conf, i.e. vers4=n In that case I got a different error message, I got "mount(2): Protocol not supported" in the client. Previously I had gotten "mount(2): Permission denied"
