You can too install the kernel by using rpm directly.
rpm -ivh --oldpackage

Thank you both very much! I dl'd the 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 and installed it
using the above instructions, and now all is well with cdrecord and k3b.
Whew -- that'll teach me to delete those old kernels, heh.
