Any distro using systemd (so, any modern mainstream distro) will have
/etc/os-release. You can do `cat /etc/os-release`, but one of the really
nice things is that this is also a machine-readable file. You can do
$ source /etc/os-release
$ echo $PRETTY_NAME
Fedora 29 (Workstation Edition)
