That only works for scalable fonts, like TrueType and Type 1 fonts.
"fixed" is an old bitmap font, from the early 1980s; it is the core
built-in font in the X server (used by default). I've been using it for
so long that it is just the way a terminal window should look to me. :)
However, the "source" BDF file format is easy enough to parse, that I
wrote a quick-and-dirty perl script to "double-size" the font, so now I
can use my "new" 12x26 on the high-DPI screen.
