Upgrading to Fedora 38: more comments
by John Pilkington
My recent posts were about 'just in case' precautions before a system
upgrade. I now appear to have a working upgraded system. It wasn't
trouble-free and I didn't use the live workstation download.
The system uses the rpmfusion nvidia 470xx video drivers, which build
modules locally via akmods. Booting the F38 system with the
kernel-6.5.6-200.fc38 did not complete, but kernel-6.5.6-100.fc37 seemed
fine.
Eventually, running the F37 kernel, I "sudo dnf reinstall"ed all the
rpmfusion 470xx packages *and* the kernel*6.5.6-200.fc38 packages and
waited for the jobs to complete. Booting to F38 seems ok now. The
problems were similar to, but worse than, those seen in earlier
upgrades. There's a related bugzilla.

Screen brightness not restored
by andreas.fournier@runbox.com
So I have laptop with Fedora 38 and the problem I have is that the
screen brightness is not restored to its previous level after it has
been locked.
I have it set so that the screen dims after a few minutes, if I then
touch the keyboard the brightness goes back to its previous level. If
I'm away longer the screen locks and I have to enter my password to
unlock. Then the screen remains dimmed and I have to press just once
either the key for more brightness or less brightness for the screen to
regain its previous brightness.
Not the biggest problem in the world but any way to solve it?

Scanner works!
by Tom Horsley
In the past I have had near infinite trouble getting scanners
compatible with linux, but I just replaced a dead Epson multi-function
device that I only ever used as a scanner with a Canoscan LIDE 300
and was shocked and amazed when it just worked out of the box.
P.S. The epson isn't quite as bad as HP forbidding you from using
the scanner if it is out of ink, but it finally decayed to the
point that it decided there were errors with the ink cartridges,
and nothing would allow it to use the scanner after that.

Upgrading to Fedora 38: Misleading 'verify' instructions
by John Pilkington
I have done several system upgrades in the past. This time I thought I
would take the suggested precautions and download the workstation .iso
On trying to verify the download, using
https://fedoraproject.org/en/workstation/download/
I got a report that "17 lines are improperly formatted". So I worried
and did it again. Same result.
This is BZ 733561, opened in 2011 and NOTABUG. Isn't it time that this
was mentioned in the 'helpful' warning suggestion?

vnc/remmina
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I can connect to a remote machine (fedora 38) via vnc or remmina (ssh or vnc)
but I just have black screen.
Here is my ~/.vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
#exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
gnome-session --session=gnome-classic &
I also tried both
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
but same behavior.
What did I miss?
Thank.

Getting grub working on a LiveUSB
by Joe Zeff
I've downloaded and verified an .iso for F38 with Xfce, used dd to write
it to a new flash drive and tried to boot it on my laptop with a brand
new blank hard drive. All I get is a grub prompt. I've tried to follow
the instructions at
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog/blog/classic-sysadmin-how-to-rescue-...
but what they describe doesn't match what's on that flash drive, and I
can't make heads or tails of it. Does anybody have a pointer to getting
a live system to boot when it doesn't Just Work?

Features, options ... how to choose :-)?
Is there a list of known-to-be-supported hardware: CPU, graphics ...??
Stupid question, right?
Thanks
