Where is PATH stored these days ? Why isn't .bash_profile executed in
F35 ?
by linux guy
I'm trying to add a few directories to PATH in F35. I'm embarrassed to
admit it isn't going well.
Where is PATH stored in F35 ?
When exactly does .bash_profile get executed ?
How does one get the bash environment reloaded without logging out and
logging in ? $source <something> ? $exec bash ? ./bash ?
What gets executed upon logging out and logging back in, versus opening a
new terminal (with Konsole) ?
$env should include everything in .bash_profile, right ?
Why doesn't F35 have ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc and instead has
~/.bash_profile ? Does .bash_profile replace .bashrc and .profile ? Would
bash read .profile if I created one ? If so, when ?
What happened to .inputrc ?
Thanks

Redshift and geoclue problems
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 35
redshift-1.12-13.fc35.x86_64
geoclue2-2.5.7-6.fc35.x86_64
If I manually start geoclue
# systemctl start geoclue.service
as root, redshift can communicate with
geoclue2 and redshift works fine.
But redshift can not start geoclue,
unless geoclue was started as root first:
$ redshift
Waiting for initial location to become available...
Unable to start GeoClue client:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied:
disallowed, no agent for UID 500.
Access to the current location was denied by GeoClue!
Make sure that location services are enabled and that
Redshift is permitted to use location services. See
https://github.com/jonls/redshift#faq for more information.
Unable to get location from provider.
can not start geoclue as a standard user
(group = 500 or users).
I have redshift in /etc/geoclue/geoclue.conf:
[redshift]
allowed=true
system=false
users=
Redshift is "suppose" to be able to start geoclue
manually as a user.
What gives?
Many thanks,
-T

Messages following a crash: [Hardware Error]: event severity: fatal
by Eyal Lebedinsky
I just had the system lock-up hard, requiring hitting the reset button.
I now see in the system log:

I understand that this is related to the preceding crash. If so, what does it tell me?
Doing a search suggests that if this happens rarely then it can be ignored- true?.\
I now see that I had it also last Oct but not earlier. This hard lock-up happens at times (more than twice for sure)
and if I can do something about it then I would.
TIA

Easy way to keep my F35 laptop and desktop computers perfectly
sync'd. Rsync ?
by linux guy
Hi people.
These days I find myself constantly going back and forth between working on
my laptop and working on my desktop computer. It is very tiring setting up
the same applications twice, moving files back and forth etc.
I would like to find a way to keep my laptop and desktop computers
perfectly sync'd. Same applications installed, same setup, same files,
everything.
They are both running F35. Ideally I'd have a script that I would execute
from either machine that would bring it up to date with the other machine.
So I'd log into a machine, run the script and instantly be at the same
place I was with the other machine. Like I was working on the new machine
all along.
Thoughts on how to do this ?
Thanks

Three approaches:
Upgrade 1 release close to the EOL of current release. This way you are
moving to a mature release.
Upgrade 2 releases typically at EOL of current release. This lessens
the number of upgrades, but means moving to a immature release.
Upgrade 2 releases some 3 months past EOL of current release. This
lessens the number of upgrades, and you move to a somewhat mature
release. But means operating without any updates (especially security
related) for this period of time.
Choose your poison.
I normally go with choice 2 but often delay and end up with choice 3.

how do I an application to show up on gnome's menu?
by Michael Hennebry
What is the magic spell to get an application to show up on gnome's menu?
I've gone by an example on the internet and came up with this:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Tomato
Comment=Tomato
Icon=org.gnome.Terminal
Exec=/home/hennebry/bin/tomato.sh
# Terminal=true
Categories=GNOME;GTK;System;TerminalEmulator;
I tried it as ~/.local/share/applications/wtf.desktop .
It doesn't work as /usr/share/applications/wtf.desktop either.
I do not mean that it craps out.
It just does not show.
Not if I restart gnome.
Not even if I reboot.
It seems to me that I should be able to find it next to Terminal.
I can find Terminal under applications/utiities.
Tomato is not there.
[root@localhost ~]# journalctl -r | grep wtf
[root@localhost ~]# dmesg | grep wtf
[root@localhost ~]#
How do I make it work?

Fedora's memtest option doesn't work, but found something that seems to??
by Michael D. Setzer II
I've noticed for a while running memtest from grub2
menu just gives a blue screen and locks machine.
Had a similar issue running it from grub4dos, but found
running syslinux memdisk and then running program
worked, but exact same thing didn't work with grub2??
So, just tried using the iso versus the memtest.img
extracted from it, and that comes up.
Manually modifed the grub.cfg by coping section that
Fedora creates and making changes??
Have seen messages saying it was broken, but never
found any fixes. So, not sure some can tell why? or if this
would be useful to others to try??

Screen sharing: global solution for Wayland that works for all apps
by Raman Gupta
I'm finally switching over to Wayland as my daily driver.
However, I'm still finding big problems with screen sharing in general. I'm
on KDE/Plasma.
Many apps that are supposed to support screen sharing on Wayland --
Electron-based apps, Chromium, OBS, proprietary apps like Zoom etc. either
completely don't work, or work but only partially. For example, Chrome can
share X11 windows but not Wayland windows, and cannot share screens at all
(the option is available, but the screens are just black). OBS doesn't work
with Pipewire+Wireplumber either, though it does seem to be able to capture
windows that are running under XWayland.
Some very nice and useful apps e.g. Pop simply output: "we don't support
Wayland, switch to X11".
As long as it is up to each app to develop their own solutions for Wayland
this situation is likely to only change in a decade or so, if even then.
Are there any tech initiatives on the go -- maybe at the compositor level?
-- to have Wayland screen sharing work essentially transparently to apps
that have already got screen sharing working for X11? I'm fine with a
global setting that says "I don't care about screen sharing security" --
that's essentially what I'm doing by changing my desktop back to X11 anyway.
