Security Flaw - Thunderbird FYI
by Ed Greshko
Latest version of Thunderbird does integrate OpenPGP and does provide end-to-end encryption.
There is, IMO, a security flaw. The "Generate Key" function they supply does not have the
option to create a private key with a pass phrase.
This means if you get an encrypted message, walk away from you system, and forget to secure it
anyone can click on an encrypted message it will be displayed.
It should allow for pass phrase. And, there should be a "timeout" setting for how long a
vaild pass phrase has been entered for viewing messages.

KDE not starting
by GianPiero Puccioni
Hi,
This morning when I botted my laptop (Dell G15) and the login didn' appear, just
the mouse arrow. I thougt it was a sddm problem so I switched to gdm and it
worked and Gnome started but not KDE(X11), not even with a new user. I installed
LXDE and that too worked without problems but it gave me an error about
KDEconnect(crashed) and the same when I tried to start Konsole, while the LXDE
terminal works.
Journalctl reports a lot of kdesomething that dumped core, the first seems to be
kdeconnect...
It seems that KDE is, for some reason hosed. Is it possible to do a reinstall of
KDE or reinstalling F34 is the only solution.

IP address changes for legacy initscripts connections
by Sam Varshavchik
My external network connection was set up before the days of NetworkManager,
configured in a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts ifcfg file.
It has a bunch of IPADDR settings, for the public IPs.
"nmcli connection show" shows the connection just fine. "ipv4.addresses"
lists the IP addresses that get fished out of the ifcfg file, for example.
There's nothing in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections so I take that
NetworkManager is reading the initscripts directly.
I need to change these IP addresses. What's the least painful way to do that?
Just edit the ifcfg file, and restart Network Manager?
Attempt to update them via nmcli (I have to work out the syntax)? Will that
work, and update the ifcfg files?

packages: where does x come from?
by jtagcat jtagcat
I've looked on multiple occasions for a 'dnf whomaintains', or a section in info containing 'source' or maintainer.
Let's take an example:
$ dnf info kubernetes-client
Source : kubernetes-1.20.5-1.fc34.src.rpm
Repository : @System
From repo : fedora
URL : https://k8s.io/kubernetes
(...License, Description, Size, Architecture, Version, Release, Summary)
How or where do I make a suggestion? Can I send a patch/PR to the automated build process, if there is one?

What I see is (1) on a new message, the send button is greyed out, but if I clear the Bcc field it *appears* to become active and (2) on a reply, the Send button is greyed out, but clearing Bcc doesn't do anything to the Send button. In BOTH cases, the Send button--whether it appears active or not--does nothing.

Thanks. I guess I've been unclear. I CANNOT send any e-mail with Thunderbird 91 under any circumstances. New, reply, doesn't matter. Nothing will send. Either the Send button is greyed out (on replies) or does nothing (new messages).
The Bcc thing is just possibly a clue, but it doesn't alter this fact.

laptop remains on after closing lid
by Anil F Duggirala
Hello,
I have been experiencing an issue on sporadic occasions. Having worked
on my laptop, I close the lid and expect it to suspend. An hour later I
open the lid, I see that it is on (not suspended) and am shown a black
screen and the laptop is smoking hot (really hot). I hard shutdown turns
the system off (havent tried any other way to get the system working
because the temperature is so high I get scared, I dont really remember
if the fans were on at this point, although I believe they are not
because the temperature is really high).
This has happened a few times, but is not happening always. How can I
test suspend action when laptop lid is closed? How can I test the laptop
lid close sensor is working? What can I do if this happens again? Is
there a way to log temperatures to make sure the system is shutting down
when high temperatures are reached?
System: Fedora WS 34 on Dell XPS 15 with 4K touchscreen (this screen is
heavy and I believe could generate a lot of heat too if it is left on).
thank you,
