Virtual camera on OBS-Studio not working
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I have upgraded from F33 to F34. Everything is working fine now except
the OBS-Studio virtual camera, which is not working.
I am using v4l2loopback, and I see that my camera lights up when I
open OBS-Studio, but suddenly it goes off.
There is no problem with my camera, as it works fine on Skype, for instance.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

curious service files installed on fresh f34 system
by Tom Horsley
Just been comparing my f33 and f34 partitions, and while every
other service file in the universe lives in /usr/lib/systemd/system
the two new services dbus-org.freedesktop.oom1.service and
dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service are not installed there.
They appear to be in
/etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.oom1.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.oom1.service
/etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.resolve1.service
The /etc files are symlinks to other services in the "normal"
place, but with a different name (oom rather than oom1)
Does anyone know what all this convolution is about?
I thought the /etc directories were where system administrators were
supposed to install copies to override the system files, why are
things installed there by fedora?
Just curious after my scripts to list info about new services failed
because the file wasn't found where I expected it :-).

How to Report an issue to an RPM maintainer??
by Michael D. Setzer II
Just found a bug in dialog program with --pause option.
Have a project (G4L) that uses it, and it worked fine all
the way up to Fedora 32.
That has Version: 1.3-20191210.
Just upgraded build machine from Fedora 32 to Fedora
33, and found the command no longer works. It shows the
count down value, but never counts down.
Fedora 33 has dialog - Version: 1.3-20200327.
Contacted the maintainer, and got an immediate reponse
that it was a bug, and had been fixed after that version.
Downloaded the current latest source code Version:
1.3-20210324. Built it, and it works fine on the Fedora 33
Was looking for who to contact, but don't know where or
to who I would report the issue.
Solved my problem, but would like to get it resolved for
other that might have some that that uses dialog with the
--pause option.
Thanks.

gnome 40 observations
by Tom Horsley
I like that the start screen defaults to what you get when you
go to activities. There is actually some chance that a new user
will have an idea of how to do things instead of just seeing an
empty screen.
I don't like that favorites are now all the way on the bottom
so you have to run your mouse much farther to get to them.
Maybe on gnome 41 they can cluster the activities button, the
search entry and the favorites all near the top left instead
of spreading them out so far.
I'm still going back to my own custom fvwm setup once I get
everything installed and configured the way I like it :-).

drive layout
by bruce
Hi.
Doing some research into how devs are using their dev systems in terms
of the actual layout/partition of the drives. I've seen plenty of
articles, figured I'd ask here as well.
If you have an interested, I'd appreciate your thoughts.
1) How is your drive/system laid out regarding your paritions?
2) Do you have multiple drives (SSD/Sata)?
3) Is OS on one drive, apps/data on the other?
4) Do you switch between OS(es)?
5) What's your "backup" process/strategy?
6) What's your "update" strategy(ies)?
I'm looking to get a new system
AMD/ryzen -8core 16G 256G SSD - 1TBSata
I realize that I haven't changed in >10 years, so now is probably a
good time get up to date on a number of things!
thanks for your insights

Wayland and Nvidia
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I updated to F34 today and it all went very smoothly. I'm even running
KDE/Plasma under Wayland and so far haven't noticed any issues (touch
wood) ...
... except for this: according to:
https://fedoramagazine.org/whats-new-fedora-34-workstation/
" ... Fedora still defaults to X.Org when you install the NVIDIA
driver."
I have the proprietary Nvidia module loaded and both Xorg and Xwayland
are running, however there doesn't seem to be any access to the Nvidia
GPU. nvidia-settings reports:
"Unable to find display on any available system"
and my attempts to run Steam games using the Vulkan compatibility layer
(which runs happily on Xorg) don't work.
Just in case, I tried again using Gnome with the same result.
IOW, apparently Nvidia GPUs do not currently work with Wayland, but
don't work with Xorg either. Is there something I'm misunderstanding
here?

gthumb fails to start (f32)
by Eyal Lebedinsky
Today I noticed that I am running an old version of gthumb, built from src. So I removed the whole package
and then installed the standard one:
Installed Packages
gthumb.x86_64 1:3.10.1-1.fc32 @updates
It fails when launched:
(gthumb:818392): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 22:58:54.035: Settings schema 'org.gnome.gthumb.browser' does not contain a key named 'sidebar-sections'
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)
I then removed gthumb and any other gthumb related items, then rnstalled gthumb. Now I get an extra warning before the abort:
(gthumb:818392): Gtk-WARNING **: 22:58:53.989: Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme.
This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found.
(gthumb:818392): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 22:58:54.035: Settings schema 'org.gnome.gthumb.browser' does not contain a key named 'sidebar-sections'
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)
I did some searching but nothing helped. I would rather use the official package and not build from src.
[BTW: I later found my notes from 2018 saying that I built from src due to this exact failure]
[BTW: I have another similar f32 machine where it works just fine]
This is an up-to-date fedora 32 using xfwm4. It was updated for many years so some fluff may be present - maybe an obscured config somewhere?
I created a new user and got the same crash, so it is unlikely to be a user config.

sieve scripts
by Tim
Hi,
I've just gotten around to using sieve with Dovecot, and trying to work
out how scripts should be written has been a bit of a headache. There
doesn't seem to be coherent documentation, just various people's
cobbled together notes. So I'm wondering if anybody can see anything
glaringly wrong, or missing, that I haven't noticed in this script. It
seems to be working, but I don't know if that's by accident, or I've
done it right.

ifcfg scripts?
by Tom Horsley
I just built a fedora 34 virtual machine. Networking clearly
works in it since I downloaded updates. But inside the virtual
machine there are no /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* files.
Has NetworkManager completely moved where it stores network
information now? I used to be able to copy all the ifcfg scripts
to get the network setup the same as the old fedora had.
Do I have to recreate my network setup with a bunch of nmcli commands
for fedora 34?
