Subject: I have installed Fedora Workstation 33 Linux on my refurbished
HP Elitebook 840 G1 laptop because it cannot run Windows 10 at all
Good day from Singapore,
I have just bought a refurbished HP Elitebook 840 G1 laptop on 30 Dec
2020. The seller had installed a fresh new copy of Windows 10 Pro
version 1803 for me. When I went home, I formatted the laptop and
installed Windows 10 Pro version 20H2.
Within a few minutes, my laptop will freeze. I always get BSOD with
Inaccessible Boot Device error whenever I tried to reboot my laptop.
I think the problem is documented. Please refer to the following
discussion thread.
Topic: Inaccessible Boot Device Windows 10
Link:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/Inac...
I have yet to read the above discussion thread carefully.
After hitting the wall with Windows 10 Pro version 20H2, I formatted my
laptop again. This time I installed Windows 10 Pro version 1809 instead.
The same thing happened again. My laptop would freeze after some Windows
Updates. Then I would get BSOD with Inaccessible Boot Device error
whenever I tried to restart my laptop.
It seems that the problem has nothing to do with my harddisk at all. I
realize that I will get the problem after some Windows Update, which
causes the BSOD with Inaccessible Boot Device error.
Recognising that my refurbished laptop could not run Windows 10 at all,
I downloaded and installed Fedora Workstation 33 Linux.
For the past few days, my refurbished laptop with Fedora Workstation 33
Linux has been working well without any problems. This confirmed that my
harddisk does not have any issues because harddisk tests (SMART and
Short Drive Self Test) confirmed that my harddisk is in working
condition.
I am very happy and satisfied using Fedora Workstation 33 Linux on my
refurbished laptop.

Sharing my experience of using PhotoRec data recovery software on
Fedora Workstation 33 Linux
by Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: Sharing my experience of using PhotoRec data recovery software
on Fedora Workstation 33 Linux
Our photography group of 2 photographers had a photo shoot session with
a super pretty model at Orchard Gateway, Singapore on 2nd Jan 2021
Saturday at 5 pm.
After the photo shoot, which lasted 2 hours, I went home and proceeded
to transfer the photos and 4K videos to my home Windows 10 desktop
computer.
To my horror, my SD card became corrupted after I keep encountering I/O
error trying to copy a MP4 file. After trying to repair the corrupted SD
card using chkdsk, my SD card became empty. There are no photos and
videos inside my SD card at all!
Shocked, I hurriedly bought EaseUS data recovery software (1 month
subscription) for about SGD$100. But the software did not work.
Recovered photos cannot be viewed.
Recovered 4K videos cannot be played back.
I have wasted SGD$100 on an useless piece of software.
As it was getting late, I gave up trying to recover my photos and videos
at 10.30 pm and went back to my hostel.
At the hostel, I used the free PhotoRec data recovery software on my
Fedora Workstation 33 Linux on my refurbished HP Elitebook 840 G1
laptop.
I only managed to recover the photos. Recovered videos (with .MOV
extension) are not playable. I have followed the advice for recovering
lost videos from a memory card using PhotoRec at
https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf Basically I have to enable the
following option:
mov/mdat Recover mdat atom as a separate file
But that didn't work out.
This morning (3 Jan 2021 Sunday) I went to Sim Lim Square, Singapore to
buy a new Transcend USB 3.1 Gen 1 card reader for SGD$29, fearing that
my old card reader was damaged. Plugging in a memory card into a damaged
card reader could damage or corrupt your memory card.
After the purchase, I hurried home by Grab and eagerly used the free ZAR
X data recovery software.
Like PhotoRec, I was only able to recover the photos and not the videos.
The recovered videos, with extension .MOV, are not playable.
Just when I was about to give up in despair, I thought of using the free
Recuva data recovery software, which I saw it being mentioned last
night.
To my surprise, Recuva successfully recovered ALL of my photos and 4K
videos on the damaged/corrupted SD card. Recovered and playable 4K
videos have the extension .MP4. The good thing about Recuva is it did
not mangle the file names of the recovered photos and 4K videos like
PhotoRec and ZAR X. On top of that, Recuva is free software. I did not
have to pay a single cent. Kudos to the developers of Recuva.
I was relieved and very happy.
Now I want to ask EaseUS for refund since their data recovery software
don't work.

How can I downgrade e2fsprogs ? resize2fs returned an error (1)!
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
While building a live image via the livecd-creator I get the error
message which breaks the image building:
Error creating Live CD : resize2fs returned an error (1)!
Reading this BZ report :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1602046
It recommends to downgrade e2fsprogs and other related packages to the
following versions:
e2fsprogs-1.43.8-2.fc28.x86_64.rpm
e2fsprogs-libs-1.43.8-2.fc28.x86_64.rpm
libcom_err-1.43.8-2.fc28.x86_64.rpm
libss-1.43.8-2.fc28.x86_64.rpm
Now I have tried :
dnf downgrade e2fsprogs
but that just errors out saying
Package e2fsprogs of lowest version already installed, cannot downgrade it.
I have also tried:
dnf install e2fsprogs-1.43.8-2.fc33.x86_64
but there seems to be no match:
No match for argument: e2fsprogs-1.43.8-2.fc33.x86_64
Error: Unable to find a match: e2fsprogs-1.43.8-2.fc33.x86_64
Is there any way I can get my required versions ?
Why can't I downgrade ?

Migration to btrfs: Is a reinstall the best way?
by Richard Shaw
My plan is to upgrade from my current 500GB Samsung EVO to a 1TB version
and copy all my data over.
Creating the subvolumes and updating fstab is easy enough, but what else
needs to be done?
Would a reinstall do any "magic" that's difficult to do by hand?
Thanks,
Richard

ERROR: installing 'ext4', when installing kernel-core-5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
I am trying to create a livecd by using the livecd-creator.
But whenever during the build process I get the error message:
dracut: No '/dev/log' or 'logger' included for syslog logging
dracut-install: ERROR: installing 'sr_mod'
dracut-install: ERROR: installing 'ext4'
sort: fflush failed: 'standard output': Broken pipe
sort: write error
gzip: stdout: Broken pipe
gzip: stdout: Broken pipe
sort: write failed: 'standard output': Broken pipe
sort: write error
I have tried to debug this via adding selinux-policy-targeted to my
kickstart, but nothing changed.
I have tried unpacking the scripts from
kernel-core-5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64.rpm to see what was going wrong,
but I could see what was going wrong.
rpm -q --scripts kernel-core-5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64.rpm
postinstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
if [ `uname -i` == "x86_64" -o `uname -i` == "i386" ] &&
[ -f /etc/sysconfig/kernel ]; then
/bin/sed -r -i -e
's/^DEFAULTKERNEL=kernel-smp$/DEFAULTKERNEL=kernel/'
/etc/sysconfig/kernel || exit $?
fi
preuninstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
/bin/kernel-install remove 5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64
/lib/modules/5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64/vmlinuz || exit $?
posttrans scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
/bin/kernel-install add 5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64
/lib/modules/5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64/vmlinuz || exit $?
As you can see there is no dracut_install.
Can anyone tell me where dracut_install is being called from ? What is
going wrong here ?

btrfs or ext4
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I try to build a home nas to make a dlna server for audio, video and
pictures.
I have 2 disks for the data which I want to be mounted in raid1 (software).
I formated the two disks using btrfs
(mkfs.btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 /dev/sda /dev/sdb)
It works but, up to now, I can't see the advantages of this file system
vs ext4 managed by mdadm.
One disadvantage is that it seems that monitoring the system is not
possible in case of disk failure for instance.
Illuminate me with your knowledge.
Thank you.

What can I do about this.

systemd automount
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I configured an automount of directories located on a server on my local
network: in the fstab of a computer on the network I put the line:
192.168.1.16:/data /home/patte/data nfs
noauto,rw,user,nofail,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.mount-timeout=30 0 0
It works. If the server is down, no problem, the boot of the computer is OK.
But if the server gets down while the computer is working, this turns in
an awful way: everything on the computer becomes very slow, opening a
file manager takes ages, the ls command does no work and it is
impossible to unmount the directory on which the server is mounted.
Did I forgot an option in the fstab? Is there a way to solve this
problem without shuting down the computer (which also takes ages...).
Thank you for helping.
