Determining why I'm getting dropped to the emergency shell?
by Adam Mercer
Hi
I did an update this morning on my FC32 system and as there was a
kernel update I rebooted the system, it didn't come back up properly
and instead dropped me into the emergency shell.
I've had a quick look around and can't see anything obvious to explain
why it is doing this?
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot why it's dropping me into the
emergency shell so I can try to fix what's going on?
Cheers

kernel 5.8.8-200 not recognizing Intel RAID?
by Ian Pilcher
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1878970
I'm not sure how widespread this is, but I recommend being cautious
about updating the kernel if you're using "Intel Rapid Storage" RAID.
(I.e. make sure that you have console access so that you can boot the
previous kernel if necessary.)

advice on writing tablet for use with Fedora
by Ranjan Maitra
Dear friends,
With online instruction for large classes continuing into the near future, I am looking at writing tablets and wondering if any of these can be
integrated into Fedora. My examples are from:
https://www.amazon.com/Mice-Keyboards-Computer-Add-Ons-Computers/b?node=1...
I am not sure if these can do what I am hoping that they can, but I am thinking of something hooked to my machine that is essentially like an
Elmo and can be "projected" via a share screen (using zoom) and recorded (using, say, simplescreenrecorder).
Do these things exist? Any suggestions? I do not want to give up my current machine, and buying an unnecessary tablet laptop because that would
fragment my workspace (computer).
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

i686 in F32??
by Beartooth
A few months back, I had lots of trouble with what should have
been a routine, by-the-book dnf upgrade from one version of Fedora to
another. What turned out, after much frustration, to have been the
trouble was that I had several sort-of-duplicates: rpms the same except
that one was .i686 in addition to another that was .86_64.
I have just done a dnf upgrade, which installed
libFAudio-20.09-1.fc32.i686 and libFAudio-20.07-1.fc32.i686. Should I now
do dnf remove *.i686?

KDE device notifier
by GianPiero Puccioni
Hi,
recently I noticed that when I plug in a USB key it doesn't show in the device
notifier and it doesn't ask as usual what to do with it.
More info:
-I am on F32 with KDE and sddmm as login manager.
-when I plug in the key it appears in dmesg
usb-storage 2-1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
scsi host6: usb-storage 2-1:1.0
etc etc
-lsblk sees it
sdb 8:16 1 29.4G 0 disk
└─sdb1 8:17 1 29.4G 0 part
-I usually had it in /etc/fstab as
/dev/sdb1 /media/disk auto rw,exec,noauto,user,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
As I like to mount it only if I want, but I tried without the noauto and without
that line
-The device notifier is configured to mount automatically devices when plugged
in, but when I open it it says "no devices available".
-If I try "mount /media/disk" as user it works without any problem.
And I am sure it worked before.
It seems that the problem is that the system sees it but the device notifier
doesn't. Is there a recent update that could have caused this?

Just for fun

I am trying to create a bootable USB drive for Fedora 33 or Rawhide,
but the only computer I have access to tonight is a Chromebook.
My first attempt ( on my new Ryzen computer ), booted to the screen where
it ask if I want to start Fedora
or test the media, and the test immediately failed. I did not try to
reboot and
try the option to start Fedora. ( this was the latest iso of Fedora 33
from the
happyassassin website. )
My second attempt was a different iso ( Rawhide LXQT, but that one stated
it was just the most recent built ). That one would not boot.
So at the moment, I am not sure if one can use a Chromebook to successfully
create a good USB drive. It seems plausible.
I will try at least one more time.
Here is a summary of the steps. 1 ) rename Fedora.iso to Fedora.bin 2 )
open up the
"Chrome Recovery Tool" from there is works similar to Fedora
ImageWriter. ( They
probably stole it. LOL ! ) So is there any chance it would only make a
bootable image
suitable for a Chromebook installation. It does not give you choice of
changing the format
type. So I do not know if it changes it. Prior to that I tried Fat32.
My other option is to use the Linux container. and the dd command.
Right ?? How hard
could that be. But I do not see how the container can see the USB
drive. I can share the
contents of the drive with the Linux container though.
All this is way above my deteriorating I.Q.
David Locklear
P.S. I have just built a Ryzen 3 1200AF system with ASUS motherboard and
have access
to ethernet. Is there some other way to get Fedora on it ??
For some reason, my old SSD with Fedora on it would not boot. I
probably electrically fried the
SSD mishandling it. I have some other Linux SSDs, and probably with
Fedora 31 on them.
but they are not accessible this week.

Fedora 32 + nVidia graphic artifacts on resume
by Sanne Grinovero
Hello all,
after resuming from standby, many applications seem to omit repainting
or refreshing areas of the screen.
The system seems stable overall: applications keep running correctly,
but I can't see important areas on the screen.
For example, I might be able to open my email inbox, but then I can't
archive an email as the area where the control buttons are supposed to
be is entirely white (or black, in other applications).
Or, someone pings me on IM - I can see the text but I can't reply as
the reply area isn't there... you get the idea, it's annoying :)
I've seen this happening both when using Gnome and when using i3.
Since I'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers I'm assuming this is
not related with Wayland, more likely some optimisation of the nvidia
driver or how it integrates with X ?
Would anyone have a suggestion as to how to debug this further, or a
possible workaround?
Maybe some nvidia driver option I could pass on the kernel, or in the
X config file?
I'd highly appreciate solving this, as it's my primary development
machine: having to close all applications for frequent reboots has
become very inconvenient.
Unfortunately I can't easily roll back some update: I had this problem
for many weeks, as initially I dismissed it as "just a glitch"; I had
not paid enough attention to it and hadn't noticed that it was related
to resuming from standby.
This is what I'm running today:
- linux 5.8.6-201.fc32.x86_64
- nvidia 450.66
Thanks!

GDAL Code Dump
by Clifford Snow
I'm getting a core dump using any of the gdal utilities on F32. For example
running orginfo --help returns
Usage: ogrinfo [--help-general] [-ro] [-q] [-where
restricted_where|@filename]
[-spat xmin ymin xmax ymax] [-geomfield field] [-fid fid]
[-sql statement|@filename] [-dialect sql_dialect] [-al]
[-rl] [-so] [-fields={YES/NO}]
[-geom={YES/NO/SUMMARY}] [[-oo NAME=VALUE] ...]
[-nomd] [-listmdd] [-mdd domain|`all`]*
[-nocount] [-noextent] [-wkt_format WKT1|WKT2|...]
datasource_name [layer [layer ...]]
free(): invalid pointer
Aborted (core dumped)
I tried reinstalling all components but still have the same problem.
Bugzilla doesn't show any open bugs. Is anyone else experiencing problems
with GDAL?
Thanks,
Clifford

dnfdragora not making all updates available
by Temlakos
Everyone:
The reform of dnfdragora to put all available updates into groups is not
updating everything, and not updating many things it used to update
without fail.
The only reliable thing my system will update, are applications and
various desktop relevant things. And not all applications, either.
Basically, if it is not in a group, dnfdragora will not update it and I
have to fall back on the traditional Software Management application to
do these updates.
The following packages typically fail of update and even of selection on
dnfdragora:
* The kernel and related packages.
* Browsers other than Firefox.
* Application packages from repositories foreign to the Fedora
community, such as "bunkus.org" (mkvtoolsnix), google (for chrome), and
Adobe Systems Incorporated.
* System packages that run background processes that normally load
themselves at startup and stay resident.
I've checked for all possible settings I can make to solve this problem.
No joy.
I've tried refreshing metadata (which, by the way, takes fifteen minutes
every time). No joy.
I tried selecting "not showing the groups." No joy.
Suggestions?
Have any of you noticed the same issue?
My desktop is KDE.
"Check for updates" counts all packages that need an update. But again:
if they're not in a group, they're not available for a selection.
(Note: if you're going to tell me to report this as a bug, I need to
know exactly where and how. I've filed bugs in the wrong place and they
get no action.)
