ThinkPad P1: Fedora 32 USB boot
by Dan Kenigsberg
Hi,
I've got a new ThinkPad P1 and want to install Fedora 32 on it. I prepared a USB stick with the workstation ISO from https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/32/Workstati... .
I boot from it and opt to test the media. Testing is very very slow and fails after %004.9 or so. "Faulty media", you'd guess. However the same USB stick passes just fine when sticking it into my older ThinkPad T460p. "Faulty USB port on the P1 machine", you'd guess. However, the P1 machine boots well when sticking to it a Windows 10 boot media (please don't ask me why I have that available).
Has anybody seen something like this, or has a clue that would help me put Fedora on my P1?
Regards,
Dan.

Fedora rescue
by Geoffrey Leach
Recently I needed to fsck my /home partition to get the kernel to boot.
No problem, as I was unable to boot from the LiveCD and umount the
partition.
But what if the problem was with the root? LiveCD has that one mounted
and in use.
In days gone by, there was a rescue mode on the Fedora install disk. No
more, it seems.
Is there a solution for this?
Thanks.

Maybe the cable is bad?
by Tom Horsley
I was getting an infinite number of "Maybe the cable is bad"
errors in dmesg about a usb port.
It insisted on referring to "usb2-port5" when everything
else in linux talks about things like 0000:00:14.0
or lsusb says things like Bus 001 Device 004.
Is there some reference somewhere on the internet
to translate between all the different ways
linux talks about usb ports? It would be really handy
to be able to know what it is talking about instead
of having to unplug every usb cable one at a time.
Incidentally:
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 045b:0210 Hitachi, Ltd
is an external usb disk and is definitely NOT
the usb2-port5 it was yelling about. That message
finally stopped when I unplugged a USB hub
that lsusb didn't mention 2 or 5 about :-(.
(I think I plugged a well and truly broken usb
device into the hub a day or so ago and it permanently
confused it till I unplugged the hub - that device
now resides in the electronics recycle bin at
the nearby dump :-).

Mouse middle - button not working
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I would like to enable the mouse middle-button to paste what is
selected. It worked fine before, but not now. I do not know whether
the cause is that the mouse is a different one or some configuration
is missing.
Thanks in advance,
Paulo

not a block device -
by Bob Goodwin
Can someone tell me how to make this work?
[root@WS1 bobg]# livecd-iso-to-disk
/home/bobg/Downloads/Win10_1909_English_x64.iso /run/media/bobg/4C60-B824
ERROR: '/run/media/bobg/4C60-B824' is not a block device
I found this in my notes, apparently Sam Sieb suggested it as a method
of writing to a storage device, a flash drive in this case.

gedit shortcut keys - did you know?
by Max Pyziur
Accidentally I hit ctrl-; in gedit and it brings up a window pane
allowing the selection of emojis.
I can't find this as a documented feature. What else am I missing?
Also, can something like this be done in vim?
Thanks,
Max Pyziur

DNF failed first try, I ran clean metadata and re-tried, got same result:
Running transaction check
Transaction check succeeded.
Running transaction test
Transaction test succeeded.
Running transaction
The downloaded packages were saved in cache until the next successful
transaction.
You can remove cached packages by executing 'dnf clean packages'.

I have no idea why this happening, have done nothing unusual? *Bob*

Python2 package build
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
an issue has come up recently that I don't understand. This problem
applies to both F31 and F32.
Back in May I built several python2 packages that I needed to make
sbackup work on F32. sbackup is the python2 application I use to do
daily backups.
The source packages I rebuilt are
gnome-python2-2.28.1-23.fc29.src.rpm
pyorbit-2.24.0-28.fc30.src.rpm
Back in May the packages built fine. I recently upgraded one system
from F30 to F31, so I tried to rebuild the packages on F31. The build
fails. Here is one of the messages:
gnomemodule.c:55:57: warning: passing argument 3 of
'PyDict_SetItemString' makes pointer from integer without a cast
[-Wint-conversion]
55 | PyDict_SetItemString(dict, "POPT_CONTEXT_ARG_OPTS",
PyInt_FromLong(POPT_CONTEXT_ARG_OPTS));

from /usr/include/pygtk-2.0/pygobject.h:5,
from gnomemodule.c:8:
Note that despite having python set to python2 during the build it's
pulling a file from python3 directory. This same failure occurs now on
F32 as well. How can I get the compile to pull in python2 files?
[root@terrapin rpmbuild]# python -V
Python 2.7.18
The build is done:
rpmbuild -ba SPECS/gnome-python2.spec
This is dependent on also building pyorbit
rpmbuild -ba SPECS/pyorbit.spec
note that pyorbit will not build if python is python2, but will build if
you use python3
It seems to me that the whole build setup for python2 is all messed up
on both F31 and F32 and I don't know what I need to do to fix things so
I can compile both pyorbit and gnome-python2 with python set to python2.
Any help is appreciated.
