gedit shortcut keys - did you know?
by Max Pyziur
Accidentally I hit ctrl-; in gedit and it brings up a window pane
allowing the selection of emojis.
I can't find this as a documented feature. What else am I missing?
Also, can something like this be done in vim?
Thanks,
Max Pyziur

Python2 package build
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
an issue has come up recently that I don't understand. This problem
applies to both F31 and F32.
Back in May I built several python2 packages that I needed to make
sbackup work on F32. sbackup is the python2 application I use to do
daily backups.
The source packages I rebuilt are
gnome-python2-2.28.1-23.fc29.src.rpm
pyorbit-2.24.0-28.fc30.src.rpm
Back in May the packages built fine. I recently upgraded one system
from F30 to F31, so I tried to rebuild the packages on F31. The build
fails. Here is one of the messages:
gnomemodule.c:55:57: warning: passing argument 3 of
'PyDict_SetItemString' makes pointer from integer without a cast
[-Wint-conversion]
55 | PyDict_SetItemString(dict, "POPT_CONTEXT_ARG_OPTS",
PyInt_FromLong(POPT_CONTEXT_ARG_OPTS));
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| |
| int
In file included from */usr/include/python3.7m/Python.h*:109,
from /usr/include/pygtk-2.0/pygobject.h:5,
from gnomemodule.c:8:
Note that despite having python set to python2 during the build it's
pulling a file from python3 directory. This same failure occurs now on
F32 as well. How can I get the compile to pull in python2 files?
[root@terrapin rpmbuild]# python -V
Python 2.7.18
The build is done:
rpmbuild -ba SPECS/gnome-python2.spec
This is dependent on also building pyorbit
rpmbuild -ba SPECS/pyorbit.spec
note that pyorbit will not build if python is python2, but will build if
you use python3
It seems to me that the whole build setup for python2 is all messed up
on both F31 and F32 and I don't know what I need to do to fix things so
I can compile both pyorbit and gnome-python2 with python set to python2.
Any help is appreciated.

NVME drive is not detected
by Alex Gurenko
Hello everyone, I'm facing a weird problem. I've recently rented a PC - ASUS G21CX, which comes with 2 disks:
- NVME SSD Intel 660p 512Gi
- SATA HDD Toshiba 1Ti
Obviously it arrived with Windows 10 installed and want to install Fedora on it, however Fedora Live image does not recognize NVME drive, like it's not even there. HDD is available as /dev/sda as expected.
dmesg and journalctl does not show any errors except some usb-related failures, but I don't think it's related in any way.
Windows and BIOS both recognize the disk. I've disabled the Secure Boot feature but that had no effect.
I've tried both Workstation image and KDE image (which I intent to use). I was hoping to see something else on other distros, but no other live image managed to boot on this machine. I've tried Ubunut 20.04 LTS, Manjaro KDE, PopOS with nVidia drivers all are getting stuck at boot.
The rest of the hardware:
- Motherboard Chipset: Intel Z390 (Cannon Lake-H)
- Core i7-9700K
- ASUS RTX 2070
BIOS settings are almost as limited as a laptop, but nothing unusual from what I can tell.
Do you have any pointers or ideas what could it be and how to fix it?
---
Best regards, Alex

xsane and simple-scan
by Mike Flannigan
It is hard to argue that xsane is simple and intuitive,
but it does do a good job after you learn it. Even
the GOCR is respectable.
I hadn't tried simple-scan until now. It doesn't
automatically detect the scan size on my scanner,
and I don't see a way to adjust for scan size.
Otherwise it does work pretty good.

Re: Any subs for Libreoffice?

Hi Sam,
I really do want to like Libre Office, but...
I have installed it over the years across two counties
and I hae yet to have a SINGLE customer that has stayed
with it. It is just too counter intuitive and buggy.
In that case, pleased to meet you.
I’ve started to use StarOffice, when it was purchased by the magnificent SUN company. I was one of the people that did the porting of (by then) OpenOffice for HP-UX 10.20.
After the unfortunate L.O.-fork, I jumped, and kept using LO ever since.
Current employer prefers LO over word, and actively supports it, and advocates this to my (several tens of thousands) colleges.

A word processor, any word processor, is not a particularly good choice
for writing a book. They've long since gone from being a "word
processor" to being a secretary's all-purpose convoluted typing tool.
They're not particularly conducive to writing paragraphs and pages as
just paragraphs and pages, often horrible at very long documents, and
not really good for doing page layout. Probably not a very useful
format if you were going to take a book to a printing house, either.
I’ve written several YA books (each 120K -150K words), all done with LibreOffice.
For the proof-of-concept, I even did the complete cover and spine with LibreOffice. Without *any* adjustments it produced perfect paperbacks and hard-covers. After several edit-iterations, the publishing house kept it that way.
Latex is the usual suggestion for real authors, but will be even more
of a bastard to use if you're not into that kind of thing.
That depends.
I only once was forced to use Latex.
When including a single formula, you still can do this with L.O.
But once I turned my math notes into something more readable. For such purpose LO (or OO, ms-word or anything else) are totally unusable. Then you need context-free data entry.

OT: diagnosis of failure to boot
by geoff@hughes.net
Reboot stopped at emergency mode.
journalctl -xb does not list any complaints (that I can find), but
there's clearly something wrong! Any suggestions as to diagnosis?
kernel is 5.7.9.200. selinux is disabled.
livecd boot is OK; disk is accessible.
I saved the output of journlctl, so its available for interrogation. No obvious complaints
Thoughts? Diagnosis?

Fedora 32: can't cd to home directory on login
by Braden McDaniel
Some recent update to Fedora 32 has caused this to start happen:
Fedora 32 (Workstation Edition)
Kernel 5.7.12-200.fc32.x86_64 on an x86_64 (tty3)
mull login: braden
Password:
Last login: Sun Aug 9 21:08:51 on tty2
-- braden: /home/braden: change directory failed:
Logging in with home = "/".
[braden@mull /]$ cd
[braden@mull ~]$ pwd
/home/braden
[braden@mull ~]$
What's happening here?
Why is the login process itself failing to change to the home
directory, yet it's accessible immediately afterward?
Home directories are NFS mounted on this machine via autofs.
$ cat /etc/auto.master.d/home.autofs
/home /etc/auto.home
$ cat /etc/auto.home
* -fstype=nfs4 hinge:/endoframe-store/home/&
