What is wrong with my `nmcli device status`?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
What am I doing wrong here? nmcli says eno2 is
disconnected but is working as if it was connected.
eno2 is my (only) Internet connection.
$ nmcli device status | grep -i eno2
eno2 ethernet disconnected --
$ ping -c 1 -I eno2 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) from 192.168.250.135 eno2: 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=118 time=12.0 ms
Huh? I am confused.
Many thanks,
-T

Off-Topic - please do not shoot the messenger
by David
I have been using Fedora Rawhide as my only operating system
for over a year. I love it.
My teenager is attending school this semester 100% online and they are
100% on their own to do all their studies, as my wife and I are not able
to be there to help. The stress of all that is overwhelming.
Due to various logistics, I just had to buy her a computer, and
after careful pondering, I purchased the ACER 24 inch
All-in-One Chrome-based computer. I am extremely impressed with
this device ( but it is $ 600 ). My only regret now is not getting a
more powerful
one. Why is that you may ask, as Chrome OS is fairly lightweight ?
Running GNU/Linux on this computer is a breeze. Based on my first
impression, this implementation of Linux just may be the future
of mainstream desktop Linux.
The Linux that is installed is "Debian 10 Buster." I do not know much
about
Debian. But the integration of the apps with Chrome was amazing.
Anyone
familiar with Gnome 3, can figure this implementation out.
In the present form of this implementation of Linux, a person would either
have to already know some Linux, or have a tutor or someone sit down with
them
and show them what all the hoopla is about.
This purchase may just be the best investment that I ever made.
Only downside so far, is that certain apps may be limited in function.
For example,
I could not change the tiles in the game "gnome-mahjongg."
I do not yet know enough about this implementation to do everything I want
to do, but
it looks like I will be able to figure it out. You have to know Debian
command line and
understand the exact names of the programs in their repository to install
them.
Here is a basic summary of how to get started.
1 ) In the Settings Menu is a icon of cute fat penquin that says
"Linux Beta." Click install
and wait a few minutes depending on your internet speed.
This machine has ethernet.
2 ) a linux terminal pops up, and you can make it full-screen.
the command line will be:
name@penguin:~$
3 ) sudo work out of the box ( and with no password ). so,
type "sudo apt-get install gnome-mahjonng aisleriot
libreoffice-writer" would install those
three programs
you can launch them from terminal or go to the graphical launcher and there
will be an icon for Linux apps.
I now have a whole lot of new fun stuff to learn, like how to run Fedora
Rawhide on a ChromeOS computer.
Supposedly there will be a way to load it from a USB flash-drive.
I will try to make a video someday on YouTube about all this.

gnome-software thinks Fedora 33 is available now
by Gordon Messmer
Recently, gnome-software has started alerting me that a new version of
Fedora is available. I haven't seen anyone else mention this happening,
so I assume that there's something misconfigured on my system.
Where does gnome-software get the list of available releases, on Fedora?

Bluetooth Headset Not Working
by Richard Kimberly Heck
Hi, all,
I gather this is something of a known issue, but I wonder if anyone here
can help. I'm trying to set up a bluetooth headset for use when teaching
by Zoom. I have tried this with two different headsets and have the same
problem with both.
Pairing goes fine. If I choose "High Fidelity Playback" as the profile,
the sound works, but the mic does not work (unsurprisingly). If I choose
"Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP)", then nothing works: No sound, and no mic.
This is all being done in pavucontrol, and I'm running KDE if that's
relevant.
Thanks for any help.

kernel-5.7.17 NFS client can't "see" all directories/files
by Anthony Joseph Messina
Strange thing after upgrading a client to kernel-5.7.17, the client is unable
to list files/directories from an NFS server running kernel-5.7.15 (NFS v4.2 /
Kerberos mounted /home). The files/directories seem to be accessible if I type
in their names, but are not available via ls -l.
Reverting the client to kernel-5.7.15 restores the expected behavior (all
files/directories are visible again).
Has anyone else see this?

network printer discovery
by Neal Becker
Network printer discovery is not currently working. I have used this
printer before from this fedora laptop, but now cups can't communicate with
it, and if I try to add printer, no network printers are discovered. I
can get to the printer's web page from this laptop, and I can print from
other devices.
What could I do to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
Neal

Links to redhat subscriber only content from Fedora
by jeandet
Hello,
While looking in /etc/modprobe.d/ I found this file batman-adv-
blacklist.conf which has a funny name so I read it and here is the
content:
==============================================================
# This kernel module can be automatically loaded by non-root users. To
# enhance system security, the module is blacklisted by default to
ensure
# system administrators make the module available for use as needed.
# See https://access.redhat.com/articles/3760101 for more details.
#
# Remove the blacklist by adding a comment # at the start of the line.
blacklist batman-adv
==============================================================
I followed the link but it seems that you need a redhat subscription to
read it.
I wonder if those links could be public when also pointed form Fedora,
or what's the point to include them if regular Fedora users can't read
them?
This is not a big deal, I'm just asking in case this has been missed
or curious about the reason to leave them.
Best regards,
Alexis.

looking for a NAS ...
by Cameron Simpson
Disclaimer: not Fedora specific.
In a former life we ran our backups to QNAP NASes in a data centre. They
were nice boxes with a little LED console strip on the front and for
when desperate, a video out and a USB socket which would take a keyboard
on the back. We were happy.
On that basis we obtained a more recent QNAP for a client. No LED text
strip on the front, just a few cryptic LEDs, and nothing on the back of
any use. So when it crashes its basicly a black box, maddening.
Has anyone any recommendations for nice NASes for a small office?
Requirements:
- some kind of useful front panel - basic status at the very least,
ideally some degree of control if it isn't speaking on the network
- 10G ethernet, ideally 2
- NFS support
- something like 8 3.5" SATA drive bays, hot swap
- can run XFS natively inside - ext3 and ext4 are fragile, and we're
using iSCSI to do XFS for the large backup volume at present
- preferable capable of iSCSI, though if they do XFS inside then just
NFS will do us
The QNAPs seem to have a billion features but are a recovery nightmare
to us when they have a failure (not a drive failure, that's the usual
swap in a new drive RAID shuffle, I mean a crash or filesystem repair
situation). The current QNAP is a few years old, BTW, but we're unhappy.
Suggestions and/or experiences welcome.
Cheers,
