F32 Update problems?
by Andrew Wood
Hello,
I'm using Fedora 32 workstation. I'm wondering if it is updating
properly - especially that some of the mirrors which it uses, aren't
pulling the updates. It's a guess at the problem ...
I thought I'd check the version of F32 and so I checked the version
Settings->About on the Gnome Desktop. However, it says Fedora 32
(Workstation Edition) but little about which version ... (why is this
information not included, I don't know) ...
I notice there are occasional updates for Shotwell or Gimp on my machine
but not for the kernel, etc which seems ... odd ...
Part of the reason I'd like to update the software is that some of it is
horrendously unresponsive especially when using dialogues which involve
choosing files - the default text editor and document viewer (PDF) are
two applications which come to mind. I actually find it difficult to
believe that these apps met the QA requirements before being shipped ...
notwithstanding the usual rider for no liability for fitness of use, etc ...
Thanks for your help and assistance,
Andrew

Question about pc-case fan-hubs and open-source driver
by David
I have the fancy Commander Pro fan-hub, by Corsair. Supposedly
there is a way to adjust the fan speeds. Someone is
working on a Linux driver called "corsair-cpro." Does it work in
Fedora, and if so, how ? I think I saw somewhere that there was
a proprietary blob in the driver. The articles I see mention something
about trying to get it in the 5.9 series kernel.
Thank you.

Fedora 33 Beta
by David
My install of Beta ain't looking too Beta-like. LOL !
The new grub kernel now says "Workstation Edition" ( Hurrah !! )
I was using "glances" in 33 to check my fan speeds, but it
did not show fan speeds. Is there something I need to tweak ?
On a hardware note,
I spent a whole lot of time and money this
week tinkering with my case-fans, and have a new more breathable case, and
it is probably my imagination that temperatures are now 1 degree C lower.
Just sayin... don't try to re-invent the wheel.
Rawhide seems to be working nominally. I will try keep an eye out for any
resource-usage difference between Rawhide and 33, if that is of interest to
anybody,
as I will be flip-flopping between the two.

newbie question about Linux software
by David
I recently built a new computer and Fedora is my only operating system.
As far as I know, everything is hooked up properly, and the computer
is working nominally.
I installed the package "sysbench" and did two operations: "sysbench
memory run" and
"sysbench cpu run", and after about 30 seconds, it listed a bunch of
numbers,
which I have no idea what they mean. I have looked at glances and htop
and cpu-x and have not yet learned what all the numbers mean, but things
look okay.
What are some other things I can do to see what all is going on?
At first I could not get my G-Skill RAM to the advertised speed of 3200
MHz. but
after enabling the D.O.C.P. thing, it seems to work fine at 3200 MHz. I
opened up a bunch
of programs and turned on a three-hour YouTube video and left and came back
and
my cpu is still at a low temp of around 31 degrees C. ( I have lots of
fans )
Obviously, I could try to play some fancy on-line games. I haven't yet
learned how to do that,
but it is on my list of things to do. TORCs is probably the heaviest
game I have tried.

related to Fedora 33 Beta
by David
My install of 33 Beta, no longer says Pre-release.
Thank you to all who worked on that.
However, grub still does say "pre-release." I assume that is a kernel
thing.
Right ?
I have Version 33 installed on a NVMe in the secondary NVMe slot,
and have one of the lower-speed versions.
I am looking forward to using 33 Workstation, and it may become my
main operating system.
On the hardware side of things, my motherboard is ASUS X570, and
memory is G-Skills. CPU is Ryzen 3 1200AF, and I have no liquid-cooling.
I would say to look for the 1600AF, ( sold out already ?? ), or just wait
for
the new series, if you can afford to do that. If I were ever to do a
build
again, I would not get a model with a chipset fan. So I would say to get
a good B550, if you don't have a need for the extra PCIe-4 slot. Of
course,
if you are using a laptop, or Raspberry Pi-like device, or have a new
$ 8,000 computer, none of that is relevant.

Notifications -
by Bob Goodwin
This is Fedora 32 updated and using xfce.
How can I stop it from warning me about pasting unsafe files?
Even more annoying are the dragora update notices, I don't need dragora,
I dnf update first thing after rebooting every morning.
Help appreciated, *Bob*

Thunderbird changes to tree view - added icons taking up space
by Robert Moskowitz
I just got around to doing an update and reboot, been running for 40+
days and got some changes in Thunderbird that are rather distracting.
In the tree view, there are now icons along with the name. I did some
googling and this is "a new vector style"?
Just takes up screen space and distracting. Anyone know how to turn
these off?
thanks
