Radeon HD6450 causes ethernet failure
by Alex
Hi,
I have an older AMD Phenom II motherboard with a new HD6450 to replace
an older card that failed. While video works fine with this new card,
it somehow causes the ethernet to fail. I've tried the card in the two
different x4 slots that are available, and it doesn't make a
difference.
This is an onboard ethernet controller that was otherwise working
fine. There's just no link light, and while I can configure it
manually with ifconfig, it never detects a link.
I can get it to work temporarily with another ethernet card, but this
was pulled from another machine.
Could this just be a general incompatibility? Or is there perhaps
something I can change? I tried investigating the computer's BIOS and
there really isn't much to change in terms of IRQ assignments or
otherwise.
Since the computer and Linux recognizes it, maybe there's something
more that can be done? Maybe loading a different rtl8169 driver would
work differently?
Here's the info from lspci:

Slow performance when redirecting stdout to an existing disk file
by Dave Ulrick
While debugging a custom program that can write large output files to
stdout, I noticed that the run time as displayed by the Bash 'time' prefix
wildly varied from run to run. It turns out that the issue isn't just with
my program. I can recreate it with 'cat':
$ time cat infile >outfile
If 'infile' is on the order of 140 MB, 'time' might show something as low
as:
real 0m0.146s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.109s
CPU % 74.29
or as high as:
real 0m0.328s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.109s
CPU % 33.31
If 'outfile' doesn't exist, the 'cat' runs much more quickly:
real 0m0.082s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.081s
CPU % 99.77
Likewise, if I arrange to 'rm' the file right before running 'cat', it
runs consistently quickly:
$ time rm -f outfile
real 0m0.019s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.019s
CPU % 99.93
$ time cat infile >outfile
real 0m0.081s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.081s
CPU % 99.75
If I do these two commands in this order over and over, the timings for
'cat' are consistently fast.
In my custom C program, I have the same issue if I write to stdout or if I
'fopen' a named file like this:
fopen(outfile_name, "w")
If the file doesn't exist, the program runs consistently quickly:
real 0m0.191s
user 0m0.082s
sys 0m0.109s
CPU % 99.73
but if it exists the run times fluctuate quite a bit from run to run:
real 0m0.579s
user 0m0.072s
sys 0m0.147s
CPU % 37.85
real 0m0.473s
user 0m0.072s
sys 0m0.148s
CPU % 46.60
If I 'fopen' a named disk file right after doing unlink(outfile_name), I
get consistently fast run times.
Note: I don't think this is an issue with buffered I/O to stdout per se. I
say this because I'm seeing pretty consistent run times if I write to
stdout _as long as the output file didn't previously exist_. Rather, the
issue seems to be with _overwriting_ an existing disk file when I/O
redirection is used.
Are there any known issues with the Linux kernel, 'bash', glibc, or
whatever else might be involved with standard I/O that might cause this
issue? If this is not a known issue, what's the best way to open a bug
ticket?
I'm running Fedora 27 with the latest upgrades. The Linux kernel is
4.18.9-100.fc27.x86_64, glibc is 2.26-30, and bash is 4.4.23-1.
Thanks,
Dave

Markdown viewer
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I'm looking for a simple terminal-based viewer for Markdown files. I
*don't* want an editor. Think 'less', not 'emacs'. I don't mind if it
wants to pop up a window to show rich text, but it's not critical.
It seems remarkably* difficult to find such a beast.

Turning off LEDs on MSI GM10 gaming mouse
by Robert Moskowitz
I got this mouse for its very light touch. I developed a pinched nerve
and it hurts to mouse...
Pricy for me at $30, but the price of heath?
Anyway I hate the LEDs. I put tape over their big LED, but the roller
has its LED. My search on the web says that the LEDs can be turned of
with the system software. Interestingly enough, my Windows7 system can't...
Fedora 28 and 29-beta do see it:
MSI GM10 MSI GM10 Gaming Mouse as
/devices/platform/soc@1c00000/1c14400.usb/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/0003:0DB0:0D10.0003/input/input6

GM10 MSI GM10 Gaming Mouse] on usb-1c14400.usb-1.4/input0
input: MSI GM10 MSI GM10 Gaming Mouse Keyboard as

But Xfce mouse settings does not give me any option to turn off the
LEDs. I would be happy with a command line command for this one.

rpmbuild error
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have not done this for a while, and I was trying to build a small rpm using a previously written .spec file which I had created some time ago and which compiled without incident till F27.
The spec file is at: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/UyRdT3LJxQ5cW21SjBeR9w
The source is available at: https://code.google.com/archive/p/wbar/downloads

I wonder: what is causing these errors? Line 11 of the file seems to be something else.
I would like to put this rpm up on Fedora if possible.
Many thanks and best wishes,

USB/Flash Drive backup strategies
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
The handful of my Linux machines are backed-up via rsync and cron
(hourly) to a dedicated machine.
I use several USB/Flash drives for dedicated work that requires using them
both on my Linux laptops and on other OSs (Windows and Mac).
I'd like to somehow back these up to the dedicated machine; has anyone
devised a method to do something like this?
Thanks in advance,
Max Pyziur
