No network on first try
by Martin Wagner
I've got a Fedora 27 desktop that has a slight network problem.
I'm using VPN and I used nm-connection-editor to configure it so that
the VPN activates when eno1 activates. That worked fine in Fedora 26.
But after upgrade to Fedora 27 the network doesn't start properly at
startup, instead after I log in to gnome desktop I use the tools in top
right corner to Turn On Wired Connection and that brings up both eno1
and VPN just fine.
Any suggestion how to make it work at startup?

F19 RAID1 drive died
by Gary Stainburn
Hi all,
Yesterday one of the HDD's in a F19 (yes I know) server died. I found this
out when the server would not reboot (45miles away from where I was too :( )
The only way the server would boot was if I disconnected the drive, connected
to ATA0 /dev/sdb.
I have now replaced the drive with another of the same model and am about to
set about rebuilding the RAID1 setup. However every page that Google gives me
regarding this shows using FDisk to sort out the partition table prior to
starting.
The niggle I've got is that because these are all 3TB drives I can't use
fdisk. If I use fdisk on one of the existing drives I get:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 4294967295 2147483647+ ee GPT
Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary.
My question is, what do I need to do to set up the new drive, without using
fdisk, so that I can then start rebuilding the 3 RAID1 devices on it?
If anyone has a link to a full set of instructions for restoring a large HDD
I'd appreciate it

/etc/nsswitch.conf
by Tim
Just looking at my nsswitch file (an abbreviated version below), as it
was configured by the installation (and not modified by me), surely
that NOTFOUND bit jammed in the middle should be further to the right?
(Especially in my case, since I have a local DNS server that resolves
all the LAN addresses.)
#
# /etc/nsswitch.conf
#
# An example Name Service Switch config file. This file should be
# sorted with the most-used services at the beginning.
#
# The entry '[NOTFOUND=return]' means that the search for an
# entry should stop if the search in the previous entry turned
# up nothing. Note that if the search failed due to some other reason
# (like no NIS server responding) then the search continues with the
# next entry.

Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

F27: Grub2 hosed; request rescue help
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
While doing an upgrade on a non-critical laptop, including a kernel
upgrade, the machine froze.
Rebooting brought information to the effect that no boot image was
available.
I've been trying to find, and also using different CDs to rescue the
system.
I have both an F27 workstation install DVD and a SuperGrub2 Disk.
Along with having no Google-fu today, nothing seems to be enabling me to
have much progress in rescuing this machine.
It's a Dell Latitude E6220; 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM.
Any suggestions and advice on links etc would be appreciated.
Much thanks,
Max Pyziur

Starting programs when no internet connection is available
by ni.ls@posteo.de
Hello,
I'm encountering a strange issue with my Fedora 27 Gnome installation.
I'm sometimes connected to a WiFi network without a working Internet
connection. When that's the case, some programs like Firefox,
Thunderbird or even LibreOffice take really long to start. As soon as I
disable the connection to that particular network (e.g. by enabling
Airplane Mode), everything works smooth again.
Any thoughts why that might be?
Regards,
Nils.

The obnoxious uglification trend has been going on since the second
Dubya Bush term, both in cars and pickups. You can see it clearly if
you look at the generation photos in the brand nameplate articles in
Wikipedia.
For several vehicle generations, designs were pretty stable among, for
example, Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable, Toyota Camry, and the F150 series of
Ford pickups. Then the virus broke out about 2006 or so, and vehicle
looks have been going from tolerable, to ugly, to unbearable. For the
latter, see the front-end photos of the 2017 Toyota Camry.
> Anyway, I disapprove of this trend. If I wanted to drive a paper airplane, rocket ship, or angry robot, I’d buy one of those. I might get one if they could fly, but given the damned traffic jam I was in, I suspect the Subaru SUV probably couldn’t fly or sprout huge treads or legs to climb over the rest of us or it would have.
Chaos forfend that we have to start navigating in three dimensions
instead of just two. Only the simplest automated driving in two
dimensions can be accomplished now, and the entire system is not ready
for prime time. The required automated technologies for three
dimensional driving, which would be much more necessary than those for
two dimensions, cannot be much more than ethereal flickers in
unconscious brains, if they exist at all.

du Weirdness - how is this possible
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I started deleting GBs of stuff from:
/dev/sdb1 /backup
but df did not reduce from 95% so I looked more closely and found this
weirdness:
# du -s -BG 20180216
43G 20180216
# du -s -BG 20180216/*
1G 20180216/naf_dirs
43G 20180216/phil
1G 20180216/root
# du -s -BG 20180216/phil/*
1G 20180216/phil/0
1G 20180216/phil/0_finance
1G 20180216/phil/0_naf
1G 20180216/phil/Maildir
1G 20180216/phil/txts
1G 20180216/phil/vimwiki
Where has ~37GB disappeared to? There are no files held open and I have
successfully umounted and re-mounted the partition - what is going on?
Thanks,
Phil.
