does "isovfy" actually *do* anything?
by Robert P. J. Day
just downloaded some sizable centos 7 iso images, and thought i
would validate them to whatever extent "isovfy" can do that, but
here's what happened in the blink of an eye:
$ isovfy CentOS-7-x86_64-Everything-1708.iso
Root at extent 1d, 2048 bytes
[0 0]
No errors found
$
that iso image is well over 8G in size, but i got that response back
in about the time it took to hit the ENTER key. there is no way that
command could have examined that entire image, so what exactly is
isovfy supposed to be doing? does it just look at the header? does it
do *anything*?

Electrum and hardware wallets
by Martin Wagner
Hi
I've got a Fedora 27 desktop with electrum-3.0.5-1.fc27.noarch
installed. It works otherwise except with hardware wallets.
I have a Trezor that shows up fine in the system logs when I connect it
and that I can use together with Chrome, but Electrum won't recognize
it. I also have a Ledger Nano S that used to work with Electrum, but
after some update, not sure when, it now says "Cannot find python
library for 'ledger'. Make sure you install it with python3" when I try
open the wallet.
Anyone with more luck with Electrum and hardware wallets on Fedora?

fed/centos - recovery app/process???
by bruce
Hey..
In the event of a "crash" is there some kind of process/app for
Fed/Centos that can be used to "recover" the entire working
environment of the server/box. As the only user it would be "nice" to
be able to simply run something which would then "restore" my edit
apps, my term sessions, and other apps I was running... and have the
processes/apps running in the same order in the process tabs..
Or am I dreaming. I've been looking for a bit and haven't seen anything.
thanks.

VM recommendation for single Android app
by Jon LaBadie
On my Android tablet I use a contract bridge app
to practice against robots.
On my Fedora 26 desktop I've installed an instance
of Android as a VirtualBox guest OS for just the
same game app.
I'd like to install the game app on my Fedora 27,
8 yr old laptop. It is much lower performance than
my desktop but VBox is the only virtualization
technique with which I am familiar.
Would some other vt be more appropriate for this
use case? Perhaps some android docker container
in which I could install the bridge app?
I'd love to be able to click one icon and bring
up the bridge app directly rather that the multiple
steps needed on my desktop VBox instance.
Network connectivity would be limited to android
or app updates.
Thanks for your comments,
Jon

ok -- offtopic!! -- mentor/sounding board resource for dns/vm/web setup
by bruce
Hey guys..
really off topic! (feel free to flame me!!)
I'm looking to setup a short/quick test of a vm - digitalocean/linode/aws/etc..
Where I have a final running test website. The website can be really
simple. I' interested in setting up DNS/apache (config)
selinux/firewalls/mysqldb
I can stumble through some of this, but I'd rather be able to
talk/connect with someone to quickly get through this..
And yeah, there's some $$$ for this!
If you're interested, hit me up.
Thanks much
ps. Figured I'd ask here in addition to CL (craigslist, as well as a
few of the other freelance sites..)

Radeon driver in 4.14.18
by Leander Hutton
I'm currently running F27 KDE with a Radeon Pro WX7100 and the open source amdgpu drivers. After a kernel update from 4.14.14 to 4.14.18 my video card is no longer recognized. I'm seeing this in my Xorg.0.log:
[ 6.640] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 6.640] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 6.641] (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
[ 6.641] (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
[ 6.641] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
[ 6.641] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
[ 6.892] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
3D acceleration and multihead support do not work. Rebooting back into kernel 4.14.14 fixes the problem, the card is recognized again and all of the features work. It looks like the module for the amdgpu driver isn't there in the newer kernel maybe? I'm running the stock kernels from the official F27 repos.
Thanks!

"canonical" link to info about a fedora package?
by Robert P. J. Day
i want to put together a wiki page for my students with links to all
of the interesting git-related packages they might want to peruse
after an upcoming course, and i'm looking for what would be the
authoritative web page documenting each RPM package.
for example, if they wanted to read about "git-extras", a quick
google search found the site "fedora.pkgs.org", and this page:
https://fedora.pkgs.org/27/fedora-x86_64/git-extras-4.4.0-2.fc27.noarch.r...
which is pretty much what i'm after, but i'm assuming the domain
"pkgs.org" is not associated with red hat so i'd rather not use that.
a few more seconds and i found the equivalent koji page:
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=925511
again, looks good and clearly affiliated with red hat. but as i
understand it (and i could be wrong), that page is specifically for
version git-extras-4.4.0-2.fc27 so if that package is updated, the
link will still point to the older version.
is there a generic link i can use for a given fedora package that
will keep up with new versions and just allows students to zip over
there, read up on the package, and decide whether they want to install
it to play with it further? thanks muchly.

Fedora27: Ethernet interfaces set to 100MBits/sec half duplex
by Terry Barnaby
I have just noticed that most of my systems now have their Ethernet
interfaces running at 100 MBits/s half duplex rather than the expected
1GBits/s.
I think some update has caused this to happen, probably about 5 days ago
(noticed something was slow). These are KDE/Plasma GUI systems but I'm
not sure if this is due to a change in KDE/Plasma, NetworkManager or
something else.
The KDE/Plasma NeworkManager settings GUI interface now has an "Allow
auto-negotiation" checkbox which I don't think was there before and
there is now the entry ETHTOOL_OPTS="autoneg on" in the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* file if you set it. It appears
that the default setting is 100MBits/s half duplex rather than auto
negotiate...

F27 tracker-preferences missing?
by Christopher
So... I just did a fresh install of F27, and I can't seem to find
tracker-preferences, so I can disable the annoying document indexer that
keeps crawling my drives. Anybody have any insight into why this is missing
from F27, or a workaround to effectively disable the thing?
