More olor problems -

I would like toeliminate all [or change some] colors when I list files
with xfce4-terminal. I know this has been discussed before but I haven't
found much in my notes?
How can I change them to white? I keep the display set for white text on
a black background.

why does virtualbox keep all my old /lib/modules directories
around?
by Robert P. J. Day
not sure why i never noticed this before, but even though updating
my fedora box keeps only the last three versions of the kernel, i have
a couple dozen /lib/modules directories each representing an older
version of the kernel going back to 4.11.12, and when i examine all
those old directories, they contain nothing but:
4.11.12-200.fc25.x86_64
│ └── misc
│ ├── vboxdrv.ko
│ ├── vboxnetadp.ko
│ ├── vboxnetflt.ko
│ └── vboxpci.ko
... etc etc ...
i'm sure i'm safe to manually remove all those older /lib/modules,
but should i be surprised that they're even there? is there something
i can configure about virtualbox to not have it lock those old
directories in place?

superfluous (??) proliferation
by Beartooth
I'm running F27, fully updated; but my query has to do with a
phenomenon I've been noticing for years. It's probably innocuous, but I'd
be glad of reassurance about that.
Let me say in advance that I realize any application I launch may
itself launch others, without telling me; and I'm fine with that.
I use very little of KDE; when trying to do a lean fresh install,
I look only for Konqueror and k3b. But dnf soon begins to list dozens of
KDE apps as upgrades. Something very similar occurs with LibreOffice: I
install only the word processor, but dnf pulls in lots of applications I
have no use (that I know of) for.
Today I got a sidelight on this habit. I had somehow (certainly
not by any conscious decision of mine) managed to install speech-
dispatcher, and tried to remove it. Dnf proposed to take away most of KDE
along with it, including k3b and Konqueror.
Is incruftation a word? Do I really use a couple hundred
applications all the time, unconsciously? Do the security gurux no longer
advise us to make lean installs?

I never use it. It gets in the way and uses computer resources. How
can I get rid of it?

What was systemd doing to me yesterday?
by Tom Horsley
First I noticed lots of things taking forever, such as
logging in via ssh. Then I found log messages like:
2720.scope: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
Feb 22 09:55:56 tomh su: pam_systemd(su:session): Failed to create session: Connection timed out
Then I tried to reboot, and the reboot command said there was no such
device as /dev/initctl, but it was there and looked like:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Feb 23 07:06 /dev/initctl -> /run/systemd/initctl/fifo
I eventually got this to work:
systemctl --force --force reboot
but I have no idea how long it took to finish (I was doing all this remotely).
Today I see /run/systemd/initctl/fifo is open in PID 1 and everything is
talking normally. There was a PID 1 out there yesterday, but it sure seemed
to be completely screwed up somehow.
Remind me again why it is a good idea to have PID 1 be a complicated
dbus activated grab bag of crap? Why couldn't all the complicated crap
be in PID 2 where it could be restarted and let PID 1 just be the traditional
init task that reaps dead PIDs?

How do I make a "livecd" from a fedora 27 iso? It used to be done with
an application listed in the menu.

downloading ALL Packages of a fedora release.
by JD
I do understand that robots are not allowed.
In my current situation, I would NEED to be
able to download all the Packages, save
them all on a thumb drive, and make
yum use that as the repo, to fix my problems
with a non-networked machined.

how to (re-?)construct grub menu?
by William
Good afternoon,
I found out the rather hard way what caused those boot failure problems
that were the subject of a threat starting last month. After my weekly
"dnf upgrade" last Thursday, I checked my root e-mail, and found the
hard drive had 8 bad sectors, then 16 bad sectors. A smartctl short
test showed several parameters "pre-fail", and the others "old-age". I
obtained a new drive. My Cray Research friend gave me a USB stick with
"Clonezilla-Live-Version" on it. That duplicated the old hard drive
onto the new one, but apparently not 100%. After the old drive was
removed and the new drive installed, I could not boot. The system was
being put into a grub shell(?). (It displayed the "grub> " prompt.)
After beating out heads against the wall (or the phone), my Cray
research friend gave me another USB stick with "Boot-Repair-Disk" on it.
That rebuilt a grub file, but not correctly. But at least I got a
grub menu when booting, and I was able to edit the shell that the grub
menu entry would run. I had to take the "efi" off the commands
"linuxefi" and "initrdefi". That allows me to boot up Fedora. But the
menu is missing an entry for windows, and I still have to edit that
script every time.
I want the grub menu to offer the three most recent patches of Fedora,
the most recent Fedora rescue shell, and windows-7, in that order.
(This is a dual-boot system.) And I want the shells launched by the
menu entries to be correct. How do I get that accomplished - the
correct Fedora-25 way? If it matters, the motherboard uses UEFI bios.
Thank-you in advance.
Bill.

lost mouse highlight
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
When I use xmgrace, there is now (at least 1 week), a good chance that I
lost the option text highlighting (in any document) that I can get by left clicking on
the mouse.
How can I recover this functionality without leaving the session?
I tried Alt F2, and r
but it does not help.
Some ideas?
Thank.
