cheese and webcam
by Paolo Galtieri
Since upgrading to F27 my logitech web cam no longer works. Here are the
errors I see
uvcvideo: Failed to set UVC probe control : -110 (exp. 26).
Failed to query (GET_CUR) UVC control 4 on unit 1: -110 (exp. 4).
I used cheese but it shows nothing useful. It displays a snapshut of my
desktop. If it makes a difference I'm using mate desktop.
Anyone else have a webcam working under f27?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
,Paolo

Thunderbird freezes machine
by David A. De Graaf
I have a weird and puzzling problem with thunderbird on my main
computer, running Fedora 26 (waiting for resolution before updating).
If I so much as touch an attachment to a received email, the machine
freezes. That is, the kernel refuses to start any more new processes,
however, it continues to run the existing ones. I can switch to a
different Xfce4 workspace, or simply move the mouse to activate a window
that overlaps the thunderbird window. However, the thunderbird window
is dead and won't refresh itself. Only a reboot fixes it.
Today I received an email with an OO spreadsheet attached. I was able
to click to save it successfully, but then the machine was frozen.
My numerous gkrellm graphs continued to blink, but in another terminal
I could not even ls, or cd to another directory, and typing reboot had
no effect. I was able to kill the X server with CTL-BS and achieve
a black screen with a jumbled mess of systemd gook. On a different
console (ALT-F2) I got a login prompt, then a passwd prompt, but that's
as far as login got. I had to resort to the ultimate weapon: SysReq +
REISUB, of which only the first three, REI, were sufficient, so sending
the SIGKILL signal to all processes unstuck the machine.
This problem affects ONLY my main machine; with all the others in
the house, thunderbird handles attachments perfectly. FWIW, mutt
handles the attachment without complaint. This problem has persisted
over many kernel updates; it may have been present even in Fedora 25.
I strongly suspect I have some odd plugin or addon on this machine
only. But before I start a massive witchhunt, I want to ask the
experts here:
Has anyone experienced a similar breakdown?

mf "\mode=localfont; input bbold17;"
* move bbold*.tfm into a TeX font metrics directory
* move bbold*.*pk into a TeX bitmaps directory
If you want to use the bbold font in LaTeX2e, you should:
* run LaTeX2e on bbold.dtx
* move bbold.sty and Ubbold.fd into a TeX inputs directory
* read the documentation in bbold.dvi
This file should only be distributed as part of the bbold
distribution.
It seems that an installation file is missing.

Samba version woes
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I have a Samba server running on a NAS, but according to my Windows VM
it's running SMB1 and is thus insecure, so Windows won't connect to it.
I've added the line "min protocol = SMB2" to the smb.conf file and
restarted the service, but Windows remains unconvinced.
What else do I need to do? Is there an easy way to ping the server
(from Linux) and check what protocol it's using? Note that Linux has no
problem connecting to the server.

Signal, WhatsApp, Skype - Questions
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Recently, I've become an active user of WhatsApp. Not only is it
convenient on the phone, you can also use a web browser by using the
phone app to login with QR code when it appears in the browser. One
benefit is that you don't need to install dedicated software on your
desktop or laptop.
Signal comes with a dedicated desktop; however, it's Linux incarnation is
only available for Debian-distributions, no rpm package as yet. Are there
any plans for one?
Last, there is a new version of Skype and rpm package.
However, everytime I login to my computer, Skype is automatically active.
Is there a way of disabling this feature?
Thank you,
Max Pyziur

how to change emails
by Paul Allen Newell
Dear users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org:
I am in need of changing my email address to this list. I cannot see any
easy way to do this except for unsubscribing and then re-subscribing to
this list. The monthly email which confirms my email and passwd does not
work when I try to use it. And I am not easily seeing what the site is
to "subscribe" as things are a bit different now than in 2008 when I
first subscribed.
I am sorry to have to bother the users@lists[...] with this question but
my query to user(a)lists.fedoraproject.org about what to do just gave me a
reply from mailman-bounces(a)lists.fedoraproject.org that pretty much was
pure "composed by a program" and had absolutely no useful info.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

X driver for old Radeon card
by Alex
Hi,
I'm a long-time Linux user and admin, but I don't have much experience
with the newest version of the display server (wayland, right?).
I have a fedora27 desktop and having some display problems with my HD
HomeRun tuner and believe it may be related to the video driver -
video dropout, primarily.
Is there a proprietary AMD/ATI driver for a Radeon HD5770? I believe
the one that's shipped with fedora is called nouveau?
Since the card is a few years old, there isn't much current
information on which alternative driver can be used with this card.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Here is my current list of xorg packages. Please let me know what
other information I can provide to help troubleshoot this.
