gcc unsupported version
by Hiisi T
Hi list!
Trying to compile cudaminer to play with GPU bitcoin mining. I'm following
these instructions:
http://thedestitutedeveloper.blogspot.ru/2013/12/compiling-
cudaminer-on-fedora-20.html
However make command fails with the following error:
In file included from /usr/local/cuda-8.0/bin/../
targets/x86_64-linux/include/cuda_runtime.h:78:0,
from <command-line>:0:

#error -- unsupported GNU version! gcc versions later than 5 are not
supported!
^~~~~
Here's the my gcc version:
$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 6.3.1 20161221 (Red Hat 6.3.1-1)
While I have gcc-compat installed and configured the soft to use gcc34 I
don't understand why am I getting this? Any advice please?

Failed Delta RPMs increased 10.7 MB of updates to 15.9 MB -
by Bob Goodwin
This is the first time I've observed this happening, delta rpm did the
opposite of what I expected, dunno if I have a problem in this system or
if it is in the data received? I thought it interesting if nothing else ...

Failed SDDM Login to KDE Plasma for a Specific User
by Bob Jackson
Have a Fedora 26 laptop which I update on a weekly basis by sudo from my regular account. After applying a batch of updates, including a new kernel, I rebooted. At the login screen I entered my standard login credentials but Plasma did not launch and it dropped back to the login screen.
I tried an alternate account. It worked.
Switched to VT2 and logged in with standard credentials. While doing so, the terminal reported, "Failed to connect to X server".
From that terminal ran:
startx /usr/bin/startkde
which brought up my standard KDE environment. I worked this way for a couple of days trying to find clues in logs and discussion groups. Did find a recent thread on fedoraforum.org that described my situation exactly, but had no solution.
https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1794119
Finally, while my workaround session was open, I went back to VT1 and tried another login from SDDM. It failed, but back in my working session I had an SELinux alert, which told me:
SELinux is preventing sddm-helper from write access on the file .Xauthority.
***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests **************************
If you believe that sddm-helper should be allowed write access on the .Xauthority file by default.
Then you should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Do
allow this access for now by executing:
# ausearch -c 'sddm-helper' --raw | audit2allow -M my-sddmhelper
# semodule -X 300 -i my-sddmhelper.pp
I applied the recommended fixes and tried again. Failed but received another alert:
SELinux is preventing sddm-helper from open access on the file /home/xxxx/.Xauthority.
***** Plugin restorecon (99.5 confidence) suggests ************************
If you want to fix the label.
/home/xxxx/.Xauthority default label should be xauth_home_t.
Then you can run restorecon. The access attempt may have been stopped due to insufficient permissions to access a parent directory in which case try to change the following command accordingly.
Do
# /sbin/restorecon -v /home/xxxx/.Xauthority
Applied this fix and tried again ... with success.
With the benefit of hindsight, does anyone have thoughts on why this might have happened, what these SELinux fixes (particularly the first two) did and whether this is a permanent resolution?
Thanks,

[F26] missing /run/user/${USER} directory
by Frédéric Bron
Hi,
I have a user for which /run/user/${USER} directory is not
automatically created. I manually created the directory and made it
owned by the user and all was fine but after reboot it had disappeard
and I had to do it again.
Could this be related to the fact that the user uses a remote
connection via vncserver?

Fedora and KVM switch
by Beartooth
I have a System76 netbook, several years old, running Fedora -- 24
iirc. I put it behind the KVM switch that my PCs are on, and it accepts
input from my keyboard, but it displays only on its own screen, not on the
monitor that the PCs all use. Any ideas??

Ignore this. XFCE crashed and she was logging into gnome, which had an
upgrade notice to FC26.

corrupted /tmp on F26
by Frédéric Bron
This morning, my /tmp was corrupted with many files with ????????? as
permissions/users/group when ls -la.
I rebooted and it is back again but this is strange.
Any idea why? Is it because I played with setenforce 0/1?

(OT) CCleaner alert.
by William Mattison
Several months ago, I asked this list about ways of deleting and blocking ever-cookies. A few list members suggested "CCleaner". Today, I saw an article in the CNN Finance web site about a security breach at Piriform, the owner of "CCleaner". I pasted the text of the article below.
I'm not asking anything here. I simply want list members who use "CCleaner" to be aware of this new issue so they can take appropriate measures.
Bill.
=========================
The latest security breach targeted British software firm Piriform, known for its free software CCleaner. Hackers compromised CCleaner in a sophisticated attack that affected over 2 million computers, security researchers and Piriform confirmed Monday.
CCleaner deletes unneeded files and web browser caches to keep Windows computers free of junk. But hackers were able to successfully place malware into a new version, released in August. This allowed them to control infected computers.
Piriform said in a blog post its parent company Avast discovered the hack affected two products -- CCleaner v5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud v1.07.3191 -- on September 12. The firm has since updated the software.
The company said it worked with law enforcement to shut down the hacker's server "before any known harm was done." The breach could let hackers collect computer names, IP addresses, and lists of what software people use, but no sensitive data was collected, it added.
Researchers from security firm Cisco Talos, which detected the hack, call it a "supply chain attack." Attackers got into the original computer system where the software was built, and those who downloaded would have no way of knowing their computer was compromised.
Research indicated the hacker was collecting information, like reconnaissance, about infected computers, according to Talos researcher Craig Williams.
In July, Avast acquired Piriform and said about 130 million people use CCleaner.
"The malware works like a loader," Williams said. "The bad guy could take any kind of malware he wanted, like ransomware, and push that down to end users."
The strategy is similar to the major global NotPetya attack in June that targeted Ukrainian tax software, Williams added. Hackers infected trusted software and people downloaded it without realizing it contained malware.
Piriform advises Windows users to check if they are running compromised versions, delete the app, and install the new safe version.

OT: unable to close my linked in account
by JD
After I login, I go to my account settings and go to
https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/
From there, I select Closing your LinkedIn account
Takes me to
https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/account-management/close-submit
where I am prompted to enter my password (with which I logged in).
I enter my password.
I check
Unsubscribe me from LinkedIn email communications, including invitations.
but the "Close Account", which is to the right of "Back to Settings", is
faded
and when I place the cursor over it, I get a small circle with a
backslash in it,
ala the no parking signs you see all over.
So, how else can I close that account?
I found no addresses for contacting Linkedin administrators.
Thanx!!!
