mounting iphone 5 on fedora
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
I would like to transfer photos, that I snap with Iphone, on my computer.
But, although I can see ipfone inside the window of nautilus, I can not
open it
If I try to do it, I get the error:
"Unable to access iphon -unhandled lockdown error "
I know that the problem of access to iPhone inside linux is complex.
But, just to get it a try, I tried to mount iPhone on fedora, and I
realized that I am not able to do this operation.
I would ask :
What is the iphone device file (the file /dev/xxx) to use to make mounting
this operation ?
$ sudo mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/ ???? /media/mydir....
thank you
regards
Angelo

enabling the pc speaker
by Mark Peveto
Hi all,
New to Fedora, although not all that new to linux itself.
How do I go about enabling the pc speaker in Fedora 25? I can't seem to
find any blacklist file in modprobe.d, but it's definitely turned off.
Thanks.

Interpreting smartctl data -
by Bob Goodwin
I just salvaged the hard drive from an
abandoned DirectTV box that "smoked."
Note: With their approval ...
I'm just trying to determine how much
confidence I can have in it. It was
interesting to see that it was formatted
Linux XFS initially. I reworked it with
gparted and ext4 to test it. Presently
it is in a USB adapter connected to a
USB2 port on this computer. It appears
to have been running for 2.6+ years, I
have a number of drives with at least
that much time on them and they are
still going.
Any thoughts on making sense of smrtctl
are appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

installing speech-dispatcher-ibmtts
by Mark Peveto
I'm creating these questions as separate threads so that those who search
the archives in the future can find their answer if they have the same
question as me.
I need to install speech-dispatcher-ibmtts, but the repo doesn't seem to
have it. Is there another repo I need to enable? If so, how do I do
that? I tried looking for a sources.list file, but have done enough
reading to see that Fedora doesn't seem to use sources.list.
Thanks.

virt-manager thinks an ISO file is a directory
by Patrick O'Callaghan
Trying to set up a new VM using virt-manager (KVM/QEMU) , something
I've done several times before now. However on specifying an ISO file
for installation it's telling me "<filename> must be a file or device,
not a directory". This is nonsense as the ISO is unquestionably a file.
Is this a new bug?

Strange thing...a hidden kernel,
a stealth kernel!!! running on my Fedora 25.
by renaud.luca@gmail.com
I run Fedora 25 on my laptop,on a dedicated partition, other OSs on other partitions, and a strange thing happens:
On my Fedora 25 /boot/ directory I only have kernels 4.2.3 and 4.9.12 the most recent(and a rescue kernel not numbered). However Grub2 shows 3 entries for kernel 4.8.6,4.2.3,4.9.12.I tried to get rid of 4.8.6 but rpm -qi kernel or rpm -qi kernel-core only show kernels 4.2.3 and 4.9.12.The same using dnf.The kernel 4.8.6 does not appear on /boot directory nor with rpm,dnf or anything I tried. This is really a stealth kernel and I do not know where it stands,in the first place,to get rid of it.
When I choose the corresponding GRUB2 menu entry this kernel 4.8.6 shows that it is real. With uname --all it appears as the active kernel.

Networkmanagre Refuses to use my Dlink DWA-192 USB Wifi Device in F24
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
Some time ago I was using this device on the 2.4GHz channel (Linux
has always refused to use the 5GHz channel, I say Linux, because Ubuntu
has always refused to use the 5GHz channel as Fedora has always refused
to) and when it was working it was via the ATH9K driver.
I switched the network to using Ethernet devices which are still
working fine, but I wanted to go back to wifi again because the wifi
throughput is potentially faster (the Ethernet devices sends/receives at
500Mbps whereas the 2.4GHz channel on wifi sends/receives at 600Mbps, if
I could ever get the 5GHz channel working it sends/receives at
1300Mbps), but Networkmanager refuses to activate the wifi device now.
How do I identify whether its the 4.8 kernels which are the issue
or whether its Networkmanager and how do I rectify the situation? I am
using kde at the moment and I have cut and pasted the wifi password back
into the Networkmanager definition, and had the new password stored in
Kwallet, but Networkmanager still refuses to recognize that the device
is a device it can connect to. I should also add that the device works
fine under Windows 10.

Steve

Dual head - Dual console?
by Steve Berg
Is there anyway to get a dual head system to use the two monitors as two
different consoles? I got a dual head setup working nicely in F25 and
Gnome, but when I switch to the console the two monitors are mirrored.
Can they be set up to be two different consoles as well as the virtual
consoles on "Alt-F2, Alt-F3" etc?

headset/headphones popup
by Matt Morgan
Since upgrading to Fedora 25 (Gnome), when I plug in my headset, my
computer now
a) properly routes sound to the speakers and sets sound input to the
headset's microphone (yay)
b) asks me anyway, in a popup, what kind of thing I just plugged in (why?).
This popup doesn't seem useful, although there may be some benefit I
haven't needed in 25 years and never thought of myself. Can I turn off the
popup?
This seems to happen to some people using Ubuntu, but I don't see answers
online.
Thanks,
Matt
