who forgets to turn on audio?
by Tom Horsley
This has just started happening: I'll play a youtube
video in google-chrome and get no audio.
I'll start poking around and eventually run
gnome-control-center sound
As soon as the sound control panel pops up,
audio will start playing in youtube.
So which component here is failing to activate
something to make audio work?
Anyone else seeing this?
I've got an nvidia card and the audio should
be coming from the HDMI output.
It is almost like it forgets that the audio is
set to HDMI out and suddenly remembers
that when I start the control panel.

Kernel 4.13.5-200 Ate^h^h^hMogrified My Laptop
by Lars Kellogg-Stedman
I have a ThinkPad Yoga 11e, which is a convertible notebook/tablet device.
Prior to a recent kernel update, it worked just fine as a plain laptop, and
there was no support for the tablet fcuntionality.
After upgrading to 4.13.5-200, the laptop is no longer usable.
- There appears to be support for setting the screen orientation based on
the accelerometer. Unfortunately, the orientation is 90° out of sync.
- The device is stuck in "tablet" mode, which means that the keyboard and
mouse are disabled. The touch screen works and I can get an on-screen
keyboard, but I'd like to use the actual keyboard.
It looks like the screen orientation issue can be solved by a simple patch
to the udev hwdb [1]. However, I'm less certain why the device thinks it's
in tablet mode. In the kernel logs, I see:
[ 8.875546] thinkpad_acpi: Tablet mode switch found (type: MHKG),
currently in laptop mode
...which is exactly what I saw in previous kernels (and in any case would
not seem to be the source of getting stuck in tablet mode).
While it would be super awesome to have the laptop/tablet conversion
working, I would prefer "just act like a laptop" over "just act like a
tablet". Where should I be looking for clues?

You're welcome,
Note that in older Samba servers, it may help add also the sec=ntlm
option with 1.0 version, this way:
sec=ntlm,vers=1.0
Note this is completly insecure, but some servers need it. I found it
useful when connecting to an old SCO Unix OSE 5.0 with (its) oooold
SAMBA (from Skunkware).

cifs quits after kernel 4.13.5-100.fc25 update
by Robert McBroom
The following command was used to access Seagate "Goflex Home" home NAS.
mount -t cifs '//192.168.1.66/External Storage' /mnt/external -o username=xx,password=yyy,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,domain=Seagategroup
The error is 112 Host is down
Access through dolphin or nautilus works but that is not equivalent to a mount. The NAS is seen by windows with no problem. The command works in CENTOS6. Is there something new that allows mounting file systems for full use as data files?

current best practice for f26 printing?
by William Mattison
Good morning,
After upgrading to f26, I could no longer print. Some key file (ppi file?) was gone. After wrestling quite a while with this, I found a print driver (an rpm) for my Xerox WorkCentre 6015 on the Xerox web site, downloaded it, installed it, and got it working with help from cups. That driver is older than my workstation and my printer, each of which is more than 4.5 years old.
The driver I got being so old together with the key file disappearing has me wondering. What is the current "best practice" for driving, controlling, etc. this printer in f26?
thanks,
Bill.

no login screen after f25 to f26 upgrade.
by William Mattison
Good afternoon,
I upgraded from f25 to f26 this afternoon. I didn't see any error messages, but a lot of messages went by very fast. After the verification step was done, the system automatically rebooted. After the three rectangles separately brightened and faded, the screen went blank. After over 15 minutes, still nothing. I did a hard reset. Same behavior. This is a dual-boot system; I am able to log in to windows-7.
I'm a home user, not a sys.admin. I do have f25 on a usb stick.
Please help.
Thank-you in advance.
Bill.

Kodi(again) & VAAPI - does it work?
by lejeczek
hieverybody
My Kodi, when VDPAU is disabled(in settings) ornot available
in OS, does not use VAAPI.
My fedora runs of a AMD APU A10 PRO-7800B R7 and since
4.12.x I have noVDPAU.
VLC for example, seems to be using VAAPI just fine, VLC's
debug and lowCPU usage confirms that VAAPI is there, yet
Kodi fails to use it.
Can you tell how is your Kodi handling VAAPIon your system,
ideally if you touse same family of AMD APUs?

Duplicated conflicting packages after failed dnf system-upgrade
from 26 to 27
by Marcin Zajączkowski
Hello guys. I was upgrading Fedora with the system-upgrade plugin from 26 to 27. The upgrade process failed for unknown reasons (during the packages installing), my computer rebooted and I'm not able to use my Fedora :).
I booted up with LiveCD, chrooted to my broken Fedora and I tried to resume the upgrade process. Unfortunately there is a lot (>200) conflicting packages (for Fedora 26 and 27). I tried to use "dnf remove --duplicated", however it would like to remove also all dependent packages.
Q. What can I resume update/upgrade process having duplicated packages with DNF (install new packages and remove all)?

Hybrid graphics / dual VGAs - AMD A10 PRO-7800B + rx550 - how to get
it work?
by lejeczek
hi everyone
this is very first time I'm trying dual VGAs - my Richaland
APU lost VDAPU with recent mesa/kernel, so I thought I'd try
a dGPU.
I use Asrock FM2A88X-ITX+ and just got brand new rx550.
question - how to get it work? what's preferable config?
I've tried but cannot disable onboard GPU.
It disables in the BIOS and I choose primary VGA to be RX550
yet when the f26 boots onboard GPU is still active and
actually seems to be primary VGA.
It's bit crazy - I use disk encryption so get prompt for
password - but this prompt gets output via onboard APU's gpu
whereas system(bios) boots with external PCIe to be primary.
And BIOS does set rx550 as primary, shows it's POST on
rx500, kernel selection to boot, initial boot and then...
blank, I've to go APU's vga to get password prompt.
Later in Gnome it's also not possible, well, I cannot
re-arrange VGAs using GUI.
Where has it all gone wrong? I've thought AMD's APUs where
out and in our boxes for so long that I should just work
these days?
Would you have some experience and advice you can share?
many thanks, L.
