F24: in-built camera not recognized on Dell Latitude E6400
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am not able to get my old Dell Latitude E6400 get its camera recognized on F24. I have used this ages ago and I don't recall this being a problem (with a much earlier version of Fedora).
Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?
Camorama says: Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0). Please check connection.
Cheese says: No device found.
Again, this is an in-built camera.
Best wishes,
Ranjan

F24 CUPS error_log file
by Dave Close
I'm getting an error trying to print with Fedora 24 x86_64. The syslog
message says, "Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the
error_log file for details." The CUPS interface on port 631 says,
"Filter failed". The journal doesn't seem to have any useful
information at all.
But without more details, I'm stuck trying to fix this problem. None
of the files in /var/log/cups have been updated in a year or more. So
just where is this "error_log file"?
Looking around online, I find a few others reporting a similar problem,
though with a different printer model. But I don't find any answers. If,
after I find the error log, I still can't fix things, I'll send another
message with details about the printer, but that isn't my question just
now. I just want to find the error log.

Security vulnerability in TCP of linux, patches available, how soon
in Fedora?
by stan
Hi,
There is a severe security hole in TCP on the linux system. Here are
some extracts from an abstract of the paper about the weakness.
"Instead, they identified a subtle flaw (in the form of 'side
channels') in the Linux software that enables attackers to infer the
TCP sequence numbers associated with a particular connection with no
more information than the IP address of the communicating parties. "
This means that given any two arbitrary machines on the internet, a
remote blind attacker without being able to eavesdrop on the
communication, can track users' online activity, terminate connections
with others and inject false material into their communications.
Encrypted connections (e.g., HTTPS) are immune to data injection, but
they are still subject to being forcefully terminated by the attacker.
The weakness would allow attackers to degrade the privacy of anonymity
networks, such as Tor, by forcing the connections to route through
certain relays. The attack is fast and reliable, often taking less than
a minute and showing a success rate of about 90 percent. The
researchers created a short video showing how the attacks works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4Ns5wla9DY
"The unique aspect of the attack we demonstrated is the very low
requirement to be able to carry it out. Essentially, it can be done
easily by anyone in the world where an attack machine is in a network
that allows IP spoofing. The only piece of information that is needed
is the pair of IP addresses (for victim client and server), which is
fairly easy to obtain," Qian said.
Qian said the researchers have alerted Linux about the vulnerability,
which has resulted in patches applied to the latest Linux version.
Until then, Qian recommends the following temporary patch that can be
applied to both client and server hosts. It simply raises the
`challenge ACK limit' to an extremely large value to make it
practically impossible to exploit the side channel. This can be done on
Ubuntu, for instance, as follows:
1. Open /etc/sysctl.conf, append a command
"/net.ipv4/tcp_challenge_ack_limit = 999999999".
2. Use "sysctl -p" to update the configuration.
The full paper is available here as a pdf.

How soon will we see a kernel in Fedora that has this fixed? Or is it
already fixed?

setting a parameter for a driver that's built-in
by Chris Murphy
So I've got a driver that's built-into the kernel:
$ grep -i magic /boot/config-4.6.4-301.fc24.x86_64
CONFIG_HID_MAGICMOUSE=y
But by default it emulates a 3 button mouse. For whatever reason,
xinput is of no help on Wayland, no matter what I do with
set-button-map, the middle button always pastes whatever is in the
copy/paste buffer. And also libinput folks basically consider this a
kernel problem where I should set it to not emulate a 3 button mouse.
But sudo modprobe hid-magicmouse emulate_3button=false doesn't do
anything, and I'm wondering if that's because it's built-in and can't
be reloaded with the updated parameter? And if that's the case, it'd
seem I'm stuck unless I a.) build the kernel myself b.) convince the
kernel team to build this driver as a module rather than built in.
Ideas?

missing libpcre.so.3 (for Ricin)
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have been trying to get Ricin from https://ricin.im/ going, but I get the following when I try to run the binary:
./ricin-0.2.1.app
/tmp/.mount_Lz83Ps
/tmp/.mount_Lz83Ps/usr/bin/ricin.wrapper
/tmp/.mount_Lz83Ps/ricin.desktop
zenity, kdialog, Xdialog missing. Skipping ./bin//ricin.wrapper.
/tmp/.mount_Lz83Ps/usr/bin/ricin: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So, it appears to be looking for libpcre.so.3. However, this is not available anywhere in Fedora.
sudo dnf provides */libpcre.so.3
Last metadata expiration check: 0:59:00 ago on Tue Aug 9 07:09:07 2016.
Error: No Matches found
libpcre.so is however available and installed.
sudo dnf provides */libpcre.so
Last metadata expiration check: 0:59:16 ago on Tue Aug 9 07:09:07 2016.
pcre-devel-8.39-2.fc24.x86_64 : Development files for pcre
Repo : @System
However, I do not know if just linking one to the other will do it, or if I should be looking at some other option.
Any suggestions? These .so files with different numbers always get me.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

F24 gnome login failure
by Jon LaBadie
On my F24 laptop I typically run in a Mate environment.
Yesterday I tried to login to a gnome environment.
After entering my password there is a little pause,
screen blanks, and a fresh login screen comes back.
Looking at logs, the only error I find is:
fatal ... could not find org.gnome.Shell.desktop
That desktop file exists on none of my systems
and dnf provides '*gnome.shell.desktop' returns
nothing.
As a no brainer I eliminated all traces of gnome
and gconf under my home directory. Result was
same error.
Any suggestions?

curl - sys env vars in a curl statement
by bruce
hey peeps!!
Got a prob, and maybe I'm just tired. As far as I can tell, sys env vars
should be double quoted >"< inside a curl.
I've got the following couple of statements. The curls pretty much work
except the last curl, where I can't be sure exactly what the data for the
post is, as I can't display the curl with the sys env var..
Pointers would be good.
Thanks!

Xfce on Fedora 24?
by Robert Moskowitz
I have set up a system with F24 and installed Xfce. My old system is
running F22 with Xfce, so a bit of a jump.
But on a lot of dialogs it is saying that Cinnamon is running?
Apps are different like Nemo rather than Thudar?
System tray on the bottom not top and a few other oddities.
Did I really get Xfce? Has it changed that much?
