From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Scriptlet errors during manual installation of Fedora 23

Hi, Because Anaconda doesn't support my usual partitioning scheme (root on Btrfs in LVM in LUKS in LVM in GPT, /boot on Btrfs, etc.), I created the entire layout manually and tried to install Fedora using dnf. The same layout works perfectly fine in ArchLinux. I basically followed this howto, with adjustments for s/yum/dnf/ and for EFI/GPT: http://dustymabe.com/2014/05/29/manual-linux-installs-with-funky-storage-co… The initial filesystem installation (dnf install -y --releasever=23 --installroot=/mnt/sysimage filesystem) already got a few glitches of this form: Non-fatal POSTIN scriptlet failure in rpm package filesystem This^^^ happened to roughly half of the installed packages. I tried to proceed with the rest (i.e., to install @core @standard kernel grub2 grub2-efi sihm grub2-tools), but it failed with scriptlet errors that prevented a few key packages from getting installed at all: error: %prein(selinux-policy-targeted-3.13.1-157.fc23.noarch) scriptlet failed, exit status 126 Error in PREIN scriptlet in rpm package selinux-policy-targeted Packages with those errors are reported as failed after the verify step. What I tried next: * setenforce 0 * upgrading the installation environment and/or the sysimage with dnf and rpm from rawhide * --releasever=22 instead of 23 * ...and checking for a few other common points with this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1270663 * a plain sysimage directory with no predefined Btrfs subvolumes in it * unmounting, remounting, checking that everything has seclabel on, no weirdness in dmesg, etc. Well, nothing of the above helped; the error is still the same. How can I diagnose this? Where can I dig out the exact reason why the scriptlets are failing? Provided that Anaconda actually does some steps that I'm missing and can carry out the installation correctly, is there a way to *force* it to just accept whatever is mounted into /mnt/sysimage at the moment, without trying to make sense of it? I'm pretty sure dracut can handle my partition layout just fine, so the entire issue here is about getting the basic installation done somehow. Theoretically I could create a simple-and-stupid layout that Anaconda can handle, proceed with the installation and reshuffle the partitions afterwards, but that's sooo cumbersome that I thought I'd first ask whether someone knows a workaround to the scriptlet problems. Hi, my computer boot only in emergency mode ... Looking the journalctl (command journalctl -xb), I found (in thejournalctl ) these lines in red color : ATA2:00: link is slow to respond.... (and after..) ATA200: SRST failed (erro 16) That seem indicate that it is a problem to access the HDs.. I found a possible solution to the problem in this post: http://codeverge.com/opensuse.org.help.install/-solved-ata1-srst-failed-err… There is wrote that :...the problem can depend by the physic set up of the HD (as "master", "slave", "single drive", ...): this set up can be done by changing the position of a jumper on the HD... I know that, in the past time, the HDs had to be set physically in this way.., but recently I never heart anymore that the modern HD need this operation.. So actually I don't care anymore of the configuration of the HDs (my HD is Toshiba 1 TB that I bought few mounts ago). nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. Alternatives to Theme Font size changer Firefox plugin?

The popular theme font size changer Firefox plugin, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/theme-font-size-changer/, no longer supports Linux. The default Firefox font size is too small for people with poor eyesight. As far as I can tell, the only thing that official "Firefox themes" do is set a background image for the UI. As Benny Hill would say, biiiiiiiiiiiiig …deal. The top-ranked comment on that extension page suggests hacking "userChrome- example.css" in ~/.mozilla/firefox. $ find ~/.mozilla/firefox -name userChrome-example.css -print $ There goes that idea. Googling around the only other suggestion I found was to hack layout.css.devPixelsPerPx setting in about:config. All that did, apparently, was making the Firefox UI elements themselves bigger, but their font size – the menu and the URL bar – remained exactly the same. Anyone has other suggestions?

F21: Thunderbird insists on calling Fedora list messages junk!

Good afternoon, Most messages received from this fedora list are labelled junk by Thunderbird. This is even though I whitelisted "From" = "users-request(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". Actually, I have this problem both in my Fedora-21 and my windows-7 systems. Any ideas? Surely messages from this list are not junk! thanks, Bill.

Hi; enp0s8 not configured notification popups every few minutes (annoying) I just installed Fedora Live 64-bit KDE as a VirtualBox Guest OS. I want to have two VirtualBox ethernet interfaces: One for the vm to "see" outwards (NAT Network) and Two for me to ssh into it (Host-only) so that I'm not forced to use the console. Every few minutes (it seems like every few seconds), I get a notification popup that states that enp0s8 is not configured and then a notification popup that it is being disabled. How do I configure my outgoing ethernet interface? I used to edit a file called something like /etc/network*/interface and then I could change the default DHCP setting to be static and the default disabled (off) setting to be enabled (on). How does one do that kind of stuff now? Is that a systemd thing? Thanks, Ken Wolcott

installing via VNC over ipv6

This suggests installation using vnc over ipv6 is supported: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda/Features/Ipv6OnlyInstallation But when I use inst.vnc boot option, I get an text screen that says to connect to an ipv4 address, an ipv6 address isn't listed. When I go to a shell and use 'ip addr' there is a global ipv6 address, but no formatting for tigervnc I've come up with will connect, it won't connect: vncviewer.desktop[12590]: CConn: unable connect to socket: Invalid argument (22) If I boot Fedora 23 Server on this same hardware, the 'ip addr' address can be used successfully to ssh into the server, and also point a browser to https://[ipv6]:9090 to reach the Cockpit interface successfully. root 1744 0.0 0.9 251060 36468 pts/0 Sl+ 03:29 0:00 Xvnc :1 -depth 16 -br IdleTimeout=0 -auth /dev/null -once DisconnectClients=false desktop=Fedora rawhide installation on host 10.0.0.15 SecurityTypes=None rfbauth=0 I can't tell if -InTransports needs to explicitly specify ipv6 for it to work. Trying to kickstart a Dell R630 with ten total Ethernet ports, I see this output. Starting installer, one moment... anaconda 23.19.10-1 for Fedora 23 started. * installation log files are stored in /tmp during the installation * shell is available on TTY2 * when reporting a bug add logs from /tmp as separate text/plain attachments 18:03:37 Not asking for VNC because of an automated install Starting automated install........................................................................................................................................................................................... The dots continue "forever". /tmp/ifcfg.log ends with a series of lines like this (where the last character varies from 0..9), 18:03:40:558 DEBUG ifcfg: IfcfFile.read /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth? /tmp/program.log ends with a series of lines like, 18:03:38.616 DEBUG program: Return code: 0 18:03:38.619 INFO program: Running... udevadm settle --timeout=300 The files in /tmp are not growing though it has been more than 20 minutes since the process started. On some attempts, the dots continue all night. Other identical machines have been successfully installed using the exact same procedure. liveusb-creator gone?

Has liveusb-creator been replaced by Fedora Media Writer? I'm having difficulty installing Knoppix on a stick with the latter, although I had no problem installing an older version of Knoppix on the same USB stick with liveusb-creator some time ago. The copy now completes without error, but the stick is not seen as a bootable device, and re-booting my ThinkPad T510 ignores the USB stick, and goes to the usual kernel menu. I read that Fedora Media Writer is able to restore a USB stick to factory setting, but I see no way to do this. can't switch from X to tty consoles

Hi Sometimes with F23, after some hours, I can't switch from X to tty consoles (ex, with ctrl+alt+f2). Consoles are frozen, I can switch only to tty1, from which I started X with startx. All F23 kernel versions are concerned, now kernel-4.4.7. Same problem happens with xfce4, fluxbox or Enlightenment-0.20.x. I don't use any display manager like lightdm, gdm, etc... Any idea? -- Maderios

Fan/sleep/hibernation issues on Dell Optiplex 780 usff fedora 22

I have F22 on my son's Optiplex 780 ultra-small form factor. We seem to have a variety of (maybe related) power management issues. First, the fan often goes full-speed and starts making lots of noise. Usually this is when the computer is actually doing more work, like running Minecraft. Sometimes it happens when watching Youtube videos. Since these are the two main things he does with the computer, it pretty much always happens eventually. Second, when this happens, and he then suspends the computer, the fan stays on during suspend. It never quiets down. So I don't think the computer is suspending properly. Third, if I hibernate the computer, the fan shuts off, but the computer actually shuts down--when he returns from hibernation, he has to log in to a new session, his apps have all shut down, etc. I used to use this computer (several years ago--it was probably F16, maybe 18) and I don't recall these issues, so I believe they must be fixable. I tried installing TLP, not expecting much from it on a desktop, but figuring it wouldn't hurt, and it didn't appear to change anything. Any advice about where to start with this? Thanks, Matt

intel graphics driver fails to detect resolution

It seems if I plug in an external projector, using displayport with a vga adapter, I can only get the resolution choice detected if I reboot. Using kde/settings/display+monitor, the resolution is unavailable, unless I reboot. Any suggestion?

Fedora 23 log out automatically when login session left idle

I newly upgraded one of my machine from F22 to F23 (Gnome) and got following problem: I start the machine and login. Open a terminal and do what I need to do ( update, ... etc). Then I left it idle for awhile. The screen locks. Later after couple of minutes I tray to unlock it and if the idle time is short nearly always I succeed to log in. Otherwise I get the login menu and can select user to login. The problem it that when I have typed in the password I come again to the login menu. I can switch to one of the VT (virtual terminal) and login there, but if I try to switch back either nothing happens or I get login menu but can't login. I have search for this but has not found exact same problem. There is a reported bug which describe similar problem: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1266587 But any workaround given there didn't help. IPv6 and NetworkManager

On most of the networks where I have hosts, the Ethernet interface has an inet6 address with a 64 bit netmask and flags "scope global noprefixroute dynamic." On a Comcast Business network, though, my hosts have one inet6 address with a 64 bit netmask and the same flags, plus another inet6 address with a 128 bit netmask and flags "scope global dynamic." Testing shows that these hosts use the address with the 128 bit netmask by default as the source address for outbound connections. I'm a little confused about the details here. Why are my hosts getting multiple addresses with different prefixes?

Touching the mousepad lights it back up, but often with a different app on screen. Does not occur in Windows 10, so would not seem to be hardware-related. Presumably, this is an X thing. F23 dracut can't find disk

I have five machines which were fresh-installed with F23 back in February and all have been booted successfully a few times since. Today, booting of all of them fails in exactly the same way: dracut says it can't find the disk filesystems. The kernel boots as it should, and of course that comes from the disk, but then dracut comes along and says it can't find any of the filesystems. Not the root or home filesystems which are on LVM or the boot filesystem on a primary disk partition. Everything on the disk is ok. I've checked by booting Anaconda from a thumb drive and mounting manually. Anaconda troubleshooting mode says it can't find the filesystems either ("you have no Linux partitions"), but running vgchange -ay and a few mounts gets a proper chroot image. There must be something that is causing both dracut and Anaconda to fail to find the filesystems. I've tried following the instructions on <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Dracut_problems>, but that isn't helping: dracut:/# parted /dev/sda -s p sh: parted: command not found dracut:/# lvm vgscan File descriptor 98 (/dev/console) leaked on lvm invocation. Kickstart Help

Looking for help in building a .ks file for my laptop. I have looked at the anaconda-ks.cfg file you are given when installing Fedora 23 Workstation, and it seams like all of the disk partitioning information is missing. Is this file a condensed version with some shortcuts? Is there another file I should be looking at as I teach myself about kickstart? Specifically I want to build a ks file that for partitioning I can set up so it does full disk encryption with / = ext4 and /home = xfs . Thank you, Alex Thomas

Has anyone configured Fedora to use a joystick as a mouse, or know of a tutorial?

The subject says it. I find instructions on the web, but they seem to be more about dual use with gaming, and for more modern hardware. I just want to use an old joystick as an ergonomic mouse replacement, kind of like a weird trackball. And if I have to, I'll muck about and muddle through to try to get it working. But if someone can point to a tutorial that specifically targets Fedora, that would be great. I've found xboxdrv, antimicro, and qjoydrv so far, though the last seems to be obsolete. filesystem error

I have the following error reported in my logs, I've had it for quite some time and through several reboots EXT4-fs (md2): error count: 1 EXT4-fs (md2): initial error at 1452554514: ext4_lookup:1343: inode 1308162 EXT4-fs (md2): last error at 1452554514: ext4_lookup:1343: inode 1308162 md2 is my root partition, I ran "find / -mount -inum 1308162" find didn't return any value. How can I track down this error, identify what file it refers to and clear the error out? if it matters, its an older Fedora system (16 to be exact) Thanks, Jeff

We're running CentOS 5.10 at the moment, and I created a 15Tb ext3 filesystem on that RAID group (set this up a few years back) that has been running fine up until yesterday. I had the opportunity to add another PERC H810 controller along with a PowerVault MD1200 to add more space (44Tb as XFS), but when we went to turn the server back on, we noticed one of the disks in the RAID group had apparently failed. I ordered another drive to replace the failed on thinking that *might* be part of the problem, so I will have to wait and see on that, but I SHOULD be able to mount it, but I am not able to. Hi all, I'm using Fedora 23 with mate and trying to setup autologin. I edited a file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and uncommented lines autologin-user=pasha autologin-user-timeout=0 but after boot, I still get a login window. I also tried to uncomment pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin then after boot, I got login window with message "Unable to authenticate" over it. Any ideas where else to look? Thanks.

Bitmap font resizer (or: good classic-style terminal font)?

I guess I've been using xterm forever, and I'm really used to the classic X "fixed" font (aka "6x13"). However, as display DPI has gone up, it has gotten a little harder to see. I got a new notebook today with a 14" 2560x1440 display (210 DPI), and "fixed" isn't going to work any more. Is there an easy tool that could take the old bitmap font and double the size? That would probably be about right on this new display. In a perfect world, somebody would create a TrueType vector font with the same outline, but that's beyond my ability. How to fix : GPG key retrivial failed

Hi, I cannot finish the installation of VLC 'because in my computer there' is not the key GCG. The *command*:* sudo install VLC* ends with the error message: GPG key retrieval failed: [Errno 14] curl # 37 - "Could not open file / etc / pki / rpm-gpg / RPM-GPG-KEY-RPMFusion-free-fedora-21" to my knowledge, it should be, in the / etc / pki / rpm-gpg, the file / RPM-GPG-KEY-RPMFusion-free-fedora-21 (which has the encryption key required for installation). I do not know the reason, but I didn't get this file, and currently the installation can not 'be completed ... May some one sais me *how I can find and import this file* (/ RPM-GPG-KEY-RPMFusion-free-fedora-21) on my computer?? Thank you Angelo

Libvirt networking question

I've been occasionally using a Windows 7 VM with the libvirt system for several months now and have had no problems up to now. However recently I've been getting error messages from Windows about the network being "unknown" and my shared host/guest volume is unavailable. On the most recent attempt I see: Virtual network 'default': NAT (Inactive) as the entry under the Network Source drop-down in Virtual Machine Manager's "Show Hardware Details" menu. This is most likely PEBKAC but I'd be grateful for a newbie's guide to how this stuff should be set up without straying too far from defaults. My goal is pretty simple: a bridged network to get shared folders with my Fedora 23 host and Internet client access from the guest. poc

Blank screen after 5 minutes idle

I'm running Fedora/KDE 23 on a ThinkPad T510 laptop. If I leave the laptop open but idle for about 5 minutes the screen goes blank, and I see no way to "wake" it. The laptop seems to be alive, as the WiFi LED is flashing, and Ctrl-Alt-Delete causes the disk LED to flash briefly. I've tried everything I can to wake the laptop, including many combinations of Fn, Ctrl, Alt and F*, as well as what I take to be the SysReq button. Mounting (or preparing) LiveCD as a read-write

Hello, After copying an ISO of fedora 23 x86_64 into a USB key with the dd command, everything is fine - I can boot with that USB key. However, there is one machine where I have to use nosmp so that it will boot. There is some hw problem with this issue but this machine is only for simple tests so I don't mind that it will work as a non SMP machine, So I want to change the grub of the USB disk on key (add "nosmp" to the kernel command line) When I boot into fedora from hard disk and try to mount it, it is mounted as read-only. Also specifying "rw" and a boot options does not change it - it refuses to do so: mount /dev/sdc1 -o rw /mnt/sdc1 Failed to execute operation: Access denied. Any ideas if there is anything I can do make this USB read-write ? or is there a way to perapare Live Fedora USB key so that it could be mounted from the Hard Disk as read-write ? Regards, Kevin

I'm not convinced that SPF is all that it's cracked up to be. I still get the odd spam that's supposedly checked and okay. As well as mail passed through various systems, without being stopped, despite having headers declaring it as unverified or even some kind of outright violation. I have my own domain, and supposedly I ought to configure things to make use of SPF, but the instructional info is incomprehensible. Not to mention, the additional headache in trying to work out how to do that through my website and mail hosting company interface (with an unknown number of other members sharing IPs thanks to virtual name-based hosting). Sure, it comes with CPanel (unless that's changed since I last looked), which is supposed to do a lot of the grunt work for you, but I have no idea what it's really going to do whenever you play with the interface. Will it do the job right? Will it do it in a secure manner, or will it do it insecurely just to make it easier. I have little faith with these configurator things. And I have little faith in anti-spam systems, in general. After losing touch with someone, I (eventually) found out that: (a) My mails were erroneously being declared to spam (heck knows why, because I don't do anything that's remotely like spam that could possibly accidentally become a false positive). (b) That they couldn't be stuffed doing anything about it. And I'm sure that's the attitude of a lot of people; it's all too hard, so bury their head in the sand. The same kind of people who make websites unusable, then say that they get "no complaints," blithely glossing over the fact that they made it impossible to register a complaint. (c) Even those that cared enough to try and fix it, many would be incapable of doing so. I gave up trying to use anti-spam systems, myself, long ago, (because of any false positive being one too many, and the continual manual tweaking being more painful than just hitting the delete key twice a day) and concentrated on taking steps to not receive spam, in the first place. If I have to keep checking a spam box, what's the point of using it. It's *easier* just to check one inbox, it's been much more effective. The chief step being to post to this list using an address that's inbox auto-deletes everything without a special password, and to receive messages using a second address that isn't publicly exposed on this list. Long, long, ago, I found that posting to mailing lists was the main way to get spam, addresses are harvested from them en-masse. Stop exposing your address, and don't use ones that get easily spammed by random dictionary attacks, and your spam dwindles significantly. I also found out that uploading a PGP key to a public server is another way to receive spam, someone automatically spams addresses they harvest from them. I could test this rapidly, upload a new key, get spam from it within a day (permanent ongoing spam, every day, until I do something about it). Delete an address from a key, and it stops receiving spam within a couple of days, and stays that way. The only anti-spam technique I ever had any faith in was using a honeypot address. Any duplicates of mail received by it, in my other accounts, will be 100% spam, and can be killed without any worries. That was relatively easy to implement if I run a mailserver on my own computer, but much harder to do with externally hosted mail services, and impossible if the different mail accounts weren't on the same mail service, other than drag in all external mail, and process the lot on my own server. This seems to explain the issue. Yahoo basically wants everyone to reject yahoo emails sent from other mail servers, which is what mailing lists do. But Google is one of the few, I guess, that honor this request, and that's why it goes to spam no matter what anti-training is applied. Fedora 23 Server: can't startx

I have a fresh, updated install of Fedora 23 Server. After installation, I installed the "Basic Desktop" group. Now, when I try to run startx, it fails with the error: xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted) Where should I look to diagnose/resolve this? dnf distro-sync - an elementary question

Is it always safe to run this? I see that on my Fedora-23 system it would remove 79 packages and downgrade 7. What kind of packages are removed? I upgraded Fedora-23 from Fedora-22, which was installed directly, and I haven't installed any "unofficial" packages as far as I recall. So where do these 79 packages come from? And why does it want to downgrade 7 packages? how to remove bootloader

I have a pc which initially had a single drive with F23 installed on it, running perfectly. Now I just added a second drive and I installed again F23 on it, with the intent of using the first drive for data only. So now I have two perfectly good F23s installed on separate drives and I can boot either one of them. I want to 1) remove the bootloader from the first disk 2) reformat the system partitions on the first disk 3) keep and expand the data partitions from the first disk I know how to do 2 and 3, but I need to know how to do 1 without losing the partition table. The reason I need to remove the bootloader is that by default, the pc boots from the first drive. I can display the boot order (F12) and select the 2nd drive manually upon boot, and I can also probably change the boot order in the bios, but I recon there must be a software way to remove the bootloader. Does anybody know how to do this? Thanks!

ssh-agent not working after upgrade to fedora 23

I've googled around for this and found some similar complaints, but none of the solutions mentioned in these threads works for me. So I'm asking here. Is anyone else having trouble with xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.18.3-1.fc23.x86_64? https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2016-cebdf579ca I updated this morning, and with that update applied, when I lock the session and my monitors shut off, the system takes a very long time (which varies, but 15 seconds seems like a minimum) to turn them back on and show a password prompt. The logs also indicate that Xorg triggered the OOM killer and terminated my session while I was out to lunch. Fedora 23 multiple CPU cooling/temp errors every day

Hi all; Daily I see anywhere from 10 - 50 or more of these alerts via abrt. I'm running Fedora 23 (KDE Spin) fully up to date on a Lenovo X1 carbon 3rd gen. In all the alerts I see that the trip temp was exceeded, and then dropped below the trip temp within 1 second. Below is a sample of the output. Should I be concerned? If not can I disable the popup alert? If so, recommendations? should I consider cleaning & replacing the cpu thermal compound? Windows 10 virt-manager access Samba server

computer1 = Fedora 23 Server, running samba-4.3.6 computer2 =Fedora 23 Workstation, virt-manager VM Windows 10 computer2 happens to be a Mac, and whether Fedora or OS X I can share files just fine from the Samba server. UI wise both Fedora and OS X are about as brain dead simple as it gets, which is what I expect in the modern era. Files > Other Locations > Windows Network > COLOR > F23S Where COLOR is the workgroup set in the samba server's smb.conf and F23S is the hostname. OS X doesn't seem to care about workgroup at all, I never even see the word COLOR when I connect. But in any case both of those OS's work. Windows 10 in a VM, virt-manager running on Fedora 23 Workstation is revisiting misery. It sees only itself in the Explorer under Network. I read elsewhere the workgroups need to match among Windows machines, so I change workgroup from WORKGROUP to COLOR. And f'n wow, really, in 2016 I have to reboot Windows 10 for network changes to take effect? Stunning. So the VM comes up and it still doesn't see the Samba server, and meanwhile Fedora Workstation can't either. Shutdown the VM, Fedora Workstation can see the samba server again. Boot up the VM, now it's gone. So I change the workgroup in Windows 10 to DUNG, and reboot. Fedora Worktstation can now see the Samba server whether the Windows 10 VM is running or not. But that ultimately doesn't fix the problem, I still can't see the Samba server from the Windows 10 VM. Should this work? At this point I'm just curious if it should work and can be made to work. But as a work around I'm already likely to just setup httpd on the server and copy the file over, fully into the VM which is what I was hoping to avoid. But nothing is worth this kind of hassle. -- Chris Murphy

journalctl/rsyslog pause/delay while logging

Hi, I have a fedora23 mail server that's been working for quite some time. I have rsyslog installed and configured to log mail to /var/log/maillog. It's never had a problem, but for some reason yesterday it started intermittently stop logging for about three minutes, then catch up with the three minutes of missed data before it begins to log normally again. It then appears to log for another few minutes, then repeat this cycle. Looking at the logs with "journalctl -f" shows no such lag with logging, but I can't use journalctl for this project. Any idea what could be causing this?

. Is there an dnf downloadable application that will permit me to extract only one, or a few, of the pictures in my camera? The only application I have that works well for me is gphoto2 and it seems to do all or nothing. This morning I needed to snap a picture to put into a message but first I had to download 262 images when all I cared about was the last six I had just taken. Perhaps I don't know the proper command? How to install gnome-shell-extension-taskbar?

Fedora 22 login screen is slow to respond

Hi We are running Fedora 22 (64-bit) on a powerful workstation. At the login screen the GUI is slow to respond: the mouse is jerky, particularly when hovering over user names, and using the arrow keys to traverse over user names sometimes jumps two names for one key press. Response after login is fine. Please can anyone suggest the cause of this problem? Best regards David

KDE/Plasma not working after upgrade to F23 using dnf

A few weeks back I upgraded my desktop from F21 to F23 using instructions online and using 'dnf' to carry out the upgrade. Unfortunately I don't have the URL of the web page I used, but the upgrade worked exactly as indicated and no errors occurred. After the upgrade and reboot I logged in to find that I was in GNOME. I tried logging in again using KDE but it wasn't available. I eventually found out that it was no longer installed. I eventually found the command dnf install @kde-desktop which then gave me the option log logging in using the session type of 'Plasma'. However, after I log in all I get is a black screen and the mouse pointer. No matter how log I leave it, nothing happens and all I can do is Alt+Ctrl+Del to log out Can anyone give me ideas how to fix the problem. I really don't want to do a fresh install unless I have to (feels too much like a Microsoft style solution)

F21 Interface renaming

I am running a Fedora 21 workstation, and I am trying to run Schrodinger software package which requires a license and a 'flexnet' type of license manager. The issue is that the it expects to bind with ethXX which we all know is not the default naming convention any more. Great, ok, I google and fine some tips about renaming: 1) append "net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0" to /etc/default/grub GRUB_COMMAND_LINUX (doesn't seem to have any affect) 2) ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-name-slot.rules (which doesn't exist on my system) 3) /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (file doesn't exist, in fact /etc/udev/rules.d is completely empty) 4) Removing biosdevname (which of course doesn't exist on this system) and of course renaming the config files and changing the 'Name' in the files. I reboot, and no matter what I do it refuses to work, ifconfig still lists the old device names, and 'ifconfig eth0' fails and complains that the device doesn't exist. Any known good working solutions or a direction to try? Sub windows in gnome

Hello, I used to use gnome (in fc22), I can control the windows, i.e., maximize, minimize, and close the windows from the buttons available in the titlebar. However, when the gnome application open sub windows, these options disappear (I only have the option to right click on the windows title and use the menu). The full control on the sub window was available before version fc22. xmgrace is a good example of the mentioned behaviour. OT: free space on usb drive after ISO

Hi all, I bought a bunch of 16G thumb drives to keep o/s ISOs on. Since most of the ISO's use 1.1G or less I'd like to reclaim the unused space. Since the ISOs copy onto the raw drive, I don't think partitioning is an option. dd can copy data on and off but I'd like something more generally usable. Anybody think of a way to put a filesystem onto one of these things starting at e.g. 2G? If so, how could/would it be made accessible to file managers like thunar, nautilus, cli tools, etc. Thanks to any takers, Mike Wright

simple wget question

Hi. I know.. off topic questions are usually frowned upon! I was curious as to why the following wget returns a 403/forbidden. The base url is accessed via the ff/chrome browser.. As far as I can tell/see, the cmd should match what the network is seeing regarding the headers/traffic. Problem with mail from crond

I have problem with mail from crond. I have cron job which sends mail to root. I get following line in /var/log/maillog: Apr 8 15:00:03 lea sSMTP[1954]: Invalid response SMTP server I have google this and have not found any solution that works for me. It worked very well before Fedora abandoned sendmail. I understand that I should configure /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf but has not got it working. I just want to be able to send mail between my user on my server :-) How do I do that? -- Regards Jon Ingason

converting to btrfs

I had an raid1 partition with ext4 on it which was empty. it was /dev/md124 which was made up of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1, I decided to change this to be a btrfs partition. Initially I figured I'd simply unmount /dev/md124 and simply do a "mkfs.btrfs -f -L home2 /dev/md124" and remount the partition, however after doing some reading I believe btrfs supports raid1 directly without using the software raid driver md (?). so I then tried "mkfs.btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 -L home2 -f /dev/sdb1 /dev/sda1" and something was successfully created but this is where I am confused, is this truly a raid1 partition? secondly mounting this partition I simply specify something like "mount /dev/sda1 /mntpoint". I can see - # btrfs filesystem show Label: 'home2' uuid: 635be1e8-31d2-4b5c-b81c-1ec2cd8d9101 Total devices 2 FS bytes used 664.00KiB devid 1 size 376.46GiB used 2.01GiB path /dev/sdb1 devid 2 size 376.46GiB used 2.01GiB path /dev/sda1 To me this looks like two different partitions but I maybe wrong, so assuming it is one raid partition how would I go around having this auto mounted in /etc/fstab? I would assume this entry - UUID=635be1e8-31d2-4b5c-b81c-1ec2cd8d9101 /home2 btrfs defaults 0 0 but I'm looking for some confirmation first that I actually have a raid partition and I've done everything correctly first. Lastly if I'm reading correctly the system will NOT automatically mount a degraded array, how can I force it to automatically mount on a reload even if the array is degraded. Thanks, Jeff

disable middle mouse button?

This is on GNOME. Is there a way to disable the middle button? It's completely unworkable for me with an Apple magic mouse, which has no discrete buttons. It just has regions, and where my finger naturally resides, about 30% of the time it gets interpreted as a middle button click. This pastes garbage when I do it in Terminal, and it causes tabs to inexplicably vanish in Firefox. So it's really unworkable but I can't figure out any way in the UI to disable it. Wi-Fi Network Preference Ordering

Hi Fedora community, I have Fedora 23 and am using the default Gnome 3 desktop environment. I have two wi-fi networks within reach of my laptop and Fedora always auto-joins with the network with a weaker signal. I believe it is choosing to do so because the weaker signal is the one I first provided a password for months ago. I have not been able to determine a way to set the wi-fi network auto-join order preference. Is it possible to change the preference order? Thanks for any tips, Christopher Thielen

kernel config.gz file on livecd?

Hi guys, i'm looking for the path of the kernel config.gz on the livecd, i thought it was in /proc/config.gz but there is nothing there. Since i assume this is a mandatory file even for the live os it has to be on the system, any idea where it is? I googled it but all my research points the /proc/config.gz I need this file to make a diff with my arch config.gz so i can customize it the fedora way and improve my vga passthrough gaming performances. Fedora 23 installation failed and symptoms destroyed

The system is a newly assembled and installing Fedora 23 from live DVD is its first use. The processor is Skylake (I guess that might matter). GPT partitioning and UEFI firmware are being used. Fedora 23 installation seems to work fine until it says that it is installing the bootloader. At this point, some error message is probably produced but it gets completely lost in SPAM from journald. The desktop becomes unresponsive. All the consoles are filled with messages like this: [TIMESTAMP] systemd-journald[PID]: Failed to write entry (N items, N bytes), ignoring: Read-only file system In one of the many attempts to install, there was a message about an I/O error. But it didn't seem to say anything beyond ERRNO=5. Before the desktop becomes completely unresponsive, it is unable to launch any programs (including GNOME Terminal). I assume that journald is trying to log to a RAMdisk. This shouldn't be a problem: the system has 32G of RAM. Is there a way to stop journald messing up the record with its own (possibly recursive) complaints? That would help us figure out what the original problem is. Permutations attempted: - installing to HDD vs SSD - pre-partitioning with gparted vs specifying partitions to the installer vs giving the installer a free had at choosing the partitioning. A subsequent Ubuntu installation succeeded. I don't know which version. But Fedora 23 is preferred. (I'm not present for all this -- I'm helping via phone. So I might easily be missing some important observation.)

I am trying to infer the actual change that https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1053324 produce for the fix. What is the process to access the result of the change indicated by http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/work/tasks/5274/6435274/ in that ticket? I've looked through the current source and do not see a patch that could indicate the work done in that ticket, I've looked through the actual projects svn repo and didn't see anything. Thanks, jlc

google cloud printer?

I have a couple of epson printers that use google cloud. I can print to them from chrome. I need to add them as system printers to cups so other apps can print. If I try to delete the printers from cups, and then re-add them: sudo /usr/share/cloudprint-cups/setupcloudprint.py ... DVD writer firmware upgrade

I have a Samsung SH-S223B DVD writer and want to upgrade its firmware, but the firmware upgrade is only provided as an .exe file for W*****s, which I don't and won't have. smplayer volume control

For a long time now, the smplayer (from RPMFusion) volume control is vertical, instead of horizontal, with a negligible height, so it's essentially useless. This is still true with the latest version smplayer-16.1.0-1.fc23, and even after deleting ~/.config/smplayer. Do all Fedora users see this, and can it be fixed?

Changing partition sizes on dual boot disks.

Hi all. I have a dos partitioned drive. partition 1 has windoze there is no partition 2 (it was deleted and it's space added to partition 1, using the old software called "Partition Magic". partition 3 is fedora partition 4 is fedora's swap. Fedora partition is only using 3% of it's available space: $ df -k / Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 903432024 24820728 832696536 3% / $ df -k /sda1 /dev/sda1 42015740 41972804 42936 100% /sda1 Can parted handle 1. shrinking partition 3 (i.e. starts at a numerically higher block number) 2. fixing the installed grub so that I can still boot fedora, or would I have to boot a live fedora and install grub from live fedora? 3. adding the freed space to partition 1 so that windoze can see it and use it as part of it's partition 1? P.S: I will be backing up sda3, so no fear there. Ditto with sda1. Thanx.

F23 install from hard disk

I haven't upgraded my machines in a while and I couldn't find any reference on how to install directly from the hard disk, without media. Is this still possible? None of my pcs boot off of a usb stick and the cdrom I think is failing on one of them, so I really need to install from the disk. Any suggestions? Thanks!

a project i was recently introduced to uses, quite heavily, the notion of overlaying header file directories with the now-obsolete gcc "-I-" option, and i'm curious if there are equivalent solutions that don't use that feature. summary: sizable C (and possibly, not sure, some C++) code base contains numerous, quote-surrounded header file includes of the form: h1.h; #include "h2.h" ... etc etc ... where the header file "h2.h" is frequently in the same directory as "h1.h" *but* it may not be the one that should be included. instead, the build system is currently replete with gcc build commands of the form: $ gcc -I- -Id1/ -Id2/ -Id3/ ... and so on and so on ... and "-I-" is used to force the preprocessor to resolve references to "headerfile.h" not by looking in the current directory first, but by scanning a list of "overlay" directories to see if someone has registered a "higher-priority" header file by that name. it's not the most intuitive build structure i've ever seen but it's been around for quite some time and it works and its users really don't want to have to mess with it. [SIDE NOTE: the current usage of "-I-" in this project is not so much to "split" the header file search path as that option is used right at the *beginning* of all the "-I" options, so its use is to simply refuse to look locally for header files and immediately start scanning the "-I" directories. but that doesn't really change the problem to be solved.] predictably, now that gcc 5 has obsoleted the "-I-" option, one would like to find an alternative that doesn't require a wholesale reworking of the build system. since the build system runs on centos, my current thought is to use "funionfs" to unionize those overlay directories in the same priority sequence. i just tried a trivial funionfs example and it seems to work, but is there a simpler solution? the gcc folks, in deprecating, then obsoleting, the "-I-" option, insist that one can use "-iquote" instead, but that is clearly incorrect -- the requirement here is that resolving a preprocessor include of the form: #include "rday.h" *must* *not* look in the current directory first. if there is some way to get that effect without "-I-" and without some sort of unionfs, i'd like to know what it is. thank you kindly. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. cpio Digest mismatch error?

Anyone have any idea why only fedora systems would give this error installing an rpm? Even on fedora, if I use rpm2cpio and extract the files, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the ccur_rt.h header file.

Getting rtl8192eu driver.

I just got 4 usb 802.11n nics, and they were not recognized by fedora 23?? Windows 10 did seem to have no problems, and they are rtl8192eu. Did find a page that talked about getting them to work, but the install script failed with errors. First Error was about __DATE__ and __TIME__ macros, so found an option to add to the Makefile to ignore that. The second error involved strnicmp issues, and eventually found a reference to replace that with strncasecmp. With that change the script does seem to complete. First time it didn't seem to work, but then the wlassistant was able to see the device and was able to connect to a wireless hub. Wondering if someone knows of a better solution? NFS from a VM

I have a small server that offers a number of directories over NFS. I am running a virtual machine on another physical machine. When I try to mount an NFS directory on the VM, the NFS server refuses, claiming a bad port. Successive tries result in different reported port numbers. What is going on? Is there some sort of virtio setting I am missing? NFS works fine to the machine hosting the VM, but not to another machine. --McD

Is the flash plugin no longer getting security updates?

Hi Everyone, Everywhere I go that uses useless flash, I get an error saying my flash version is out of date. When I look for an update from Adobe (i.e. back ported security fixes), there isn't one. I'm already running the latest release for Linux. Did Adobe drop the security updates to flash sooner than they promised? -- Ranbir

OT: Suspend/restore and USB devices

This is possibly a hardware issue rather than a Fedora problem, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway: I have a Bluetooth mouse connected via a BT dongle. The dongle normally sits on the back of my cpu case on the floor beneath my desk, but I've noticed this often produces lag in mouse movement, presumably caused by interference from the desk's metal frame (BTW it took me months to figure this out). I bought a USB extension cable (cheap Amazon Basics model) and now have the dongle sitting above the desk and the lag problems have gone. So far so good. However now when I suspend the system and try to restart it, nothing will happen until I physically remove the dongle from the extension cable. The screen will then come back to life and I can plug the dongle in again to get the mouse working. This never happened when the dongle was directly connected to the cpu. Do I need to get a better cable? If not, what can I do? poc

Hello, In gnome, I can control the maximize and minimize buttons (titlebar button in windows), but these button (as well as the exit/close x button) never appear the sub windows. By click right on the mouse, on the title bar, I get a list of options. However, I would like to have a direct access to the close option. Shutdown takes too long

After upgrading the kernel to 4.4.x series, it takes my laptop a long time to shut down without intervention. Sometimes I see a status saying something like "wait job is running for user ... (1m 30sec)" But a lot of the time I just see the bootup log with "Starting Switch Root..." being the last line I noticed one way to shut down is to use sysrq shortcuts (R,E,I from REISUB combo) -- obviously that's not a perfect solution.. Laptop has dual graphics, if that makes any difference.. Intel+Nvidia Not sure if filing a bug would even help, most of them just get ignored for years

Hello, I have a nuc6i5 where I have 2 SSD disks. The M.2 one (250Gb) is seen as sdb, while the sata one (500Gb) as sda. Initially I have installed f23 on the one seen as /dev/sdb and I presume the boot loader has been installed on it, correct? How to check? In a second moment I installed CentOS 7.2 specifying its new partitions still on the second disk (I plan to use the first as data disk only). With my surprise CentOS 7 made all in a fantastic way, in the sense that during the partitioning part it recognized the fedora 23 partitions and its lvm parts and without asking anything (actually there was no option to manage grub configuration at all...) it configured its (I think) grub2 so that the menu contains also the fedora 23 lines (normal one and one labeled as "Advanced options for Fedora 23...") and they work as expected So far so good, it went better than I imagined... Now I have a kernel update proposal for Fedora 23 and I have not applied it because I don'tknow if it can break anything or not (eg replace grub configuration or so on...) ANd the same doubt would be when a CentOS 7 new kernel will be available. For both the OSes I configured a (different) /boot partition, if this can be of any importance. BTW: lastly I would like in the near future to install also the free version of ESXi to make some tests with it and with oVirt (planned to be installed on the CentOS 7 OS part), while the Fedora 23 part would be to be used as a pure desktop one (that already is in place and works like a charm!) Gnuchess

Is anyone able to get gnuchess hints under Fedora? I'm using gnuchess with knights, or rather the other way round - I start knights, and choose gnuchess as chess "engine". But I see no way to access gnuchess hints. Incidentally, "gnuchess --xboard" does not seem to work at all.
